I couldn't possibly say it any better than Greg Djerejian, so I'll simply link to his post here. Read especially the first part about the press gaggle with Rumsfeld and Myers, along with Greg's comments about it.
This just floors me. Does it remind anyone else of invading Iraq ostensibly to disarm the country, then not securing the major weapons caches?
As Greg writes, "These guys should be going to bed every night with such figures firmly implanted in their head." That they have to "get back to us" several years into an occupation leads to a completely logical and appropriate question: Just what the hell is going on?
And here's a more depressing question: If thousands of our troops have been killed and permanently maimed in order to allow Iraqis time to train and ultimately defend themselves, but our most senior civilian and military leaders have to "get back to us" about how much progress has been made in that regard, what does that say about the importance of our troops' sacrifice to those leaders?
If you know someone who thinks there is even a remote chance we'll be withdrawing from Iraq in significant numbers during the next few years, tell them to contact me---I have a bridge over the Tigris to sell them.

These are evasions, not expressions of ignorance. I have no doubt that Rumsfeld and Myers know to the decimal point where things stand, but are simply unwilling to admit the grim truth in public.
Since when has the Pentagon EVER told the truth about its action in Iraq or what is really going on there in any aspect.
The majority just loves to be told fairy tales and not be challenged with the plain truth.
Iraq is a disaster, and going downhill fast.
All we are doing is increasing the Iraqi mortality and instability.
Looking at the state of affairs there, I cannot see how things may improve in the short run. It certainly will not so long as we act like Attila the Hun and do as we damm please without any accountabily.
Can Iraq find its way back on its own? It must, and they are the ONLY ones who can in the long run. It does not look good, but there is no other choice.
Looking back to the end of WWII, and the leagal principle established by the VICTORIOUS USA, there is quite a number of people that should also face similar charges here.
That will never happen as, VICTORIOUS NATIONS NEVER EVER COMMIT WAR CRIMES, only defeated ones do.
The international community knows that and that is reflected in our lost reputation that will never, ever be recovered.
To quote the famous line from CBS correspondent Bob Simon, when reporting from Vietnam, after a particularly egregious incident of civilian casualties: “There really is nothing else left to say……(pause); there’s just nothing else to say”
You mean when Rumsfeld said, "Democracy is messy". After all you "go with the army you have, not the one you want." Even though General Shinseki, the chief of the Army, was fired for saying we need several hundred thousand troops. And the admin steamrolled over everyone else that spoke up.
Always thought it was odd they quickly secured the only building of interest to the Bush administration, the Ministry of Oil. Schools, hospitals, museums, utilities, oh, and nuclear facilities were looted.
They showed us pictures, and they knew, but didn't send troops to immediately cover these areas. But effectively dealing with WMD wasn't the noble cause Bush speaks of, although that is how they sold the Iraq war to the US citizens, to the world. It couldn't be Nation Building, afterall in 2000 Bush campaigned against it.
Uranium and other nuclear material stored under UN control in Iraq until the quick fall of Saddam were stolen. Some were stolen by local citizens looking for water storage barrels, dumped the contents and used the barrels.
Do we have enough people over there now to train enough Iraqi's quickly, so we can get out asap? If that is the only thing holding us from getting out of Iraq, how about we throw everything we have at training Iraqi's. Iraq is a quagmire. Do you suppose Bush instead of another 5 weeks of vacation, so he can take care of himself and think of himself, could think of our families our service people, and could get knowledgeable, experienced people together to work feverishly on how to get our service people home asap. We need real solutions not marketing slogans.
The men that were in the old Iraqi army were kicked out by Bremer. Will normal, everyday Iraqi's have the will to fight to create an Iraq? And what if they don't? What if those insurgents are Iraqis, and fight better?
I think it was a Charlie Rose guest that said another major problem now that is undermining the Iraq country - as if a "managed civil war" isn't enough - is corruption. Iraqi's in high-up positions, who are suppose to be part of building it, are undermining their own country.
'fog of disingenuousness, if not purposeful misrepresentations, from the onset' - that pretty much sums it up.
Go fight for us, give us your life, but we ain't going to be truthful with you. Bush said it perfectly on his 5 week vacation, he is taking care of himself.
Good point about what this says in terms of how the guys running this thing perceive the sacrifice of the troops.
face it, these guys are running this thing without real knowledge of the military and for private gain.
they have no idea, because they don't really care.
perpetual conflict is good for them. facts are to be ignored.
Just how obscene the situation has become and also how hopless, I would strongly suggest reading this article by Robert Fisk.
Now I read where an american general has stated that we will be in Iraq with at least 100,000 troops for another 4 years.
Is our government and dod compost of total idiots. If this turns out to be true we will not have an army left and probably not much of a government either.
In Bob Woodward's "Plan of Attack", there are several references to "selling" the war. Selling to congress. Selling to planners. Selling to the public.
It is a Madison Avenue approach to warfare, and it remains to this day.
Short and sweet promises of democracy are not sufficient grounds to wage a war.
AP reports US military planning for 4 more years in Iraq.
I reread Chuck Hagel from last year's Foreign Affairs. His outline for foreign policy then is refreshing. Hagel in July/August 2004.
The worst thing is, we need to "win" this war, or see it resolved in a more positive than negative way. If not, there will only be a greater war.
That's "Is our government and dod A compost of total idiots". Very funny, inadvertently or not. And the answer, of course, is YES.
My understanding of the current explanation for the presence of US troops in Iraq is that they are there to protect the locals. Dare I ask, how many of them must be killed in order to protect the remainder?
This is off topic ... but this morning I set here and cried ...Once again from Stories in America this interview gave me chills ... it could have been me or any one of my buddies talking about the Vietnam war just after we had returned ... and we did this on a god damn lie ... this man went to war with courage and dedication ... believing that his country was putting him in harms way to save it from a manic with WMD that could attack his and our country ... and look what was done to him in our name .... go read this posting ...

"Does it remind anyone else of invading Iraq ostensibly to disarm the country, then not securing the major weapons caches?"
How about not securing Iraqi money? From the 7/26/2005 WSJ:
Some findings of Stuart Bowen, the special inspector general for Iraq
reconstruction:
-- The U.S. failed to keep track of nearly $9 billion it transferred to the new Iraqi government, much of which appears to have been embezzled.
That $9 billion along with $20 billion in unaccounted for Iraqi oil revenue can buy a lot of weapons.
This is from a Time story dated 7/7/03:
Meeting last month at a sweltering U.S. base outside Doha, Qatar, with his top Iraq commanders, President Bush skipped quickly past the niceties and went straight to his chief political obsession: Where are the weapons of mass destruction? Turning to his Baghdad proconsul, Paul Bremer, Bush asked, " Are you in charge of finding WMD?" Bremer said no, he was not. Bush then put the same question to his military commander, General Tommy Franks. But Franks said it wasn't his job either. A little exasperated, Bush asked, So who is in charge of finding WMD? After aides conferred for a moment,...
Think about it. 3 months after we go to war specifically because of a WMD threat, the Prez is wandering around asking who's in charge of finding them?
They didn't care then, and they don't care now.
If you know someone who thinks there is even a remote chance we'll be withdrawing from Iraq in significant numbers during the next few years, tell them to contact me---I have a bridge over the Tigris to sell them.
Dear Realist. I won't buy your bridge but don't worry. If those folks see any short term interest to pull out in a rush, trumpet victory and let the whole Middle East explode, they will. If Karl Rove says so, says for the 2006 elections, they will.
They don't care. They just don't care.
