They Done Good

I didn't have time to post anything meaningful on the immigration bill. But I thought it was Washington at its worst and, if passed, would have proved damaging in many ways. National Review, Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity, Michelle Malkin and others manned the ramparts and seem to have made a big difference. It's a reminder that if not for the Titular Right's abdication, the past few years (and probably the next few decades) might have looked much different. But as K-Lo posted during Thursday's afterglow, "Now back to work!" Yep.

It's a useful reminder, that you are a conservative, with all the baggage that entails.

"Back to work"... that's a scary, disheartening thought.

CR, I often agree with you, despite the fact that I'm to the left of you. But I either don't understand what you're saying here, or you are missing something pretty significant about the people you tout as having "done good" in this instance.

While this particular bill may very well have been "Washington at its worst", that has nothing to do with all the other messes we are in right now regarding Iraq, our fiscal policy, etc.

You may be a "traditional" conservative, but Limbaugh et al really are not. They never saw a war they didn't like, they have never been in favor of fiscal responsibility, they are not in favor of liberty except to the extent that it involves them not paying taxes.

Malkin, Hannity, Ingraham, etc? Ugh.

I'm 90 percent behind you TCR. Brings the troops home and have them protect our borders. They desparately need it. I don't trust Rush, K-Lo, Malkin, or Hannity...even on Immigration. Until they start screaming about manning the border...it really does't mean anything. That is about the only point the liberals that post here have. The Super Highway they are going to build will have pretty lax security. Of course we'll probably be all one country by then.

Hmmmm...you're being somewhat ambiguous here. I think I'm detecting something like "I didn't leave the Titular Right, they left me" going on here, but I'm just not sure. Hope you're going to elaborate - it'd be interesting.

Of course the Titular Right are the first to congratulate themselves on defeating the admittedly flawed bill. However, many of us on the right of center have never listened to a word of Hannity's radio show and still saw the illusion of the immigration bill as written.

Protect the borders first. Wasn't that sentiment around long before K-Lo and Malkin reared their harpy heads?

The fact is that even if the bill had passed and the worst circumstances were to come about from "librul" legislation, it would still pale in comparison done by the bloodthirsty neo-conservatives who were allowed access to the Republican party and my government. For that, the Right will never be forgiven.

I would rather our nation wallow in a cumbersome guest-worker program and give amnesty to folks who have been working in this country for decades than have to put up with Rove and Gonzales reading my emails and tapping my phone and Cheney torturing Gitmo detainees in my name.

I appreciate TCR's sentiment on the ill-advised immigration bill, but it's a bit like taking a victory lap at the Indy 500 after having killed all the other racers in order to win.

And don't forget, this bill was Bush's baby-- his last gasp at a "legacy"-- and all those morons like Hannity, K-Lo, Lowry, Rush, et al, have backed him on nearly every other issue.

Oh, and one other thing: yet again, Bush was wrong.

What grodge said. The right-wing media may have assisted in the demise of a flawed bill but the enemy of my enemy is not necessarily my friend and immigration reform is now on the political backburner until 2009.

And too (it must be said), the spectacle of the dogs turning to rend their former masters has not been edifying, even though my opinion of those masters was low.

Good point. Bottom line, though: this was important, and ultimately the right thing happened. How many times have we said that during the past few years?

I don't know any liberals who liked the bill either. Though I think our problem with it was that guest-slave provision.

It was a completely crappy bill that was going to be Bush's legacy, and now it's toast. I believe we can all be thankful for that.

Maybe Bush is the Uniter after all. If he can unite me with the likes of Hannity, Rush and the National Review...

Or, maybe Bush is just plain wrong on every single issue.

Grodge, I think you might have hit the jackpot here -- W stands for "Wrong on Everything"

TCR,
Hope I missed the meaning of your message because, if you believe that the likes of Limbaugh, Hannity, etc. have done any good on any issue, you are no longer credible! These are the people that have promoted and continue to promote division in our country!! I may have to exercise my right to not read your blog anymore.
