"This Thing"

CNN:

The women are too afraid and ashamed to show their faces or have their real names used. They have been driven to sell their bodies to put food on the table for their children -- for as little as $8 a day.

"People shouldn't criticize women, or talk badly about them," says 37-year-old Suha as she adjusts the light colored scarf she wears these days to avoid extremists who insist women cover themselves. "They all say we have lost our way, but they never ask why we had to take this path."

A mother of three, she wears light makeup, a gold pendant of Iraq around her neck, and an unexpected air of elegance about her.

"I don't have money to take my kid to the doctor. I have to do anything that I can to preserve my child, because I am a mother," she says, explaining why she prostitutes herself.

Prostitution is a choice more and more Iraqi women are making just to survive.

"It's increasing," Suha says. "I found this 'thing' through my friend, and I have another friend in the same predicament as mine. Because of the circumstance, she is forced to do such things."

Violence, increased cost of living, and lack of any sort of government aid leave women like these with few other options, according to humanitarian workers.

Suha says as a young girl she dreamed of being a doctor, with her mom boasting about her potential in that career. Life couldn't have taken her further from that dream.

"It's not like we were born into this, nor was it ever in my blood," she says.

What she does for her family to survive now eats away at her. "I lay on my pillow and my brain is spinning, and it all comes back to me as if I am watching a movie."

Wondering about those on the other side of this situation? Here's something called the "International Sex Guide." It features reports from men who have visited prostitutes in various countries. Yes, there's an "Iraq" section. The most recent post, from today, links to the above report and asks "Can someone give us a trip report? thanks!" Some past posts (note: don't read further if easily offended):
  • Heading over there myself in a week or two and am 50 / 50 on local action. Have been defense contracting for years (Egypt / Jordan / Yugo / Germany / Italy / Hungary) ... never had an issue finding good quality locals for dirt cheap.

  • Probably the easiest way to identify is by the make up, a house that has about 4 or 5 ladies that all look different, and only one man in the house. There may even be small children in the apartment.

  • Outside the IZ you can get a girl for the evening for $25 you can also be unceremoniously beheaded for free. Many Iraqi women are gorgeous, and, since there is nothing that really resembles a functional economy, some of them are up for screwing to support themselves and their five kids. I ended up getting some girls from an Iraqi security contactor. Some business people who live outside of the wire have gotten contacts from the hotel staff where they reside. That being said, Ali Babba is the word of the day and most people are simply blowing smoke when they say they can get you a girl—especially within the IZ. I was EXTREAMLY stupid, LUCKY, and DRUNK one nite when I took a taxi around downtown Baghdad looking for women. I met a pimp and he took me to a house where I banged 3 girls for 60 bucks until I heard morning prayers.

  • How do the Iraqi womens' pussies smell? One imagines they are not fresh. Or is one wrong?

  • I believe that Islam stresses cleanliness and dictates washing multiple times a day; however, in many parts of Iraq, including sections in Baghdad, running water is a luxury and the girls can't always wash themselves as much as someone who wears a long heavy black dress in 120+degree weather should. In my case, before we were intimate she would always wash and perfume herself.

  • Its not that they don't wash or bathe, its that they have a difficult time cleaning their clothes. Imagine wearing the same pair (or two) of dirty under garments in the hot sun all day every day, washing them in dirty water with minimal soap, the wearing them again. Its not so much the women themselves are dirty, its the close. Have noticed this with poor folk everywhere. Seem it with Syrian women, chinese peasents, Bosnia girls in moutain villages. Laundry just isn't a neccessity and the stench often rubs off. Just wrap it, don't go down on it, or have them shower first. Non issue.

  • There is at least one brothel in the IZ by the NEC in the tan colored apartment complexes. I paid $100 last night for a 6-7 24 yo widow. The only caveat is that you need to have a place where the girls can spend the night. The place isn't really an in-house operation, but rather is like a cat-house where girls from outside the IZ come to meet potential clients.

  • Well done Dirk. If she's good-looking and speaks English, you've found a keeper. As one of many young widows in Iraq, she's doing this out of necessity and not for a lifestyle, so you know what she wants (the "R" word). Could be a good two-way thing. Also, Iraqi women are usually pretty hot when they're young. Keep us posted.

  • You are a fortunate man to find ass here in the IZ so quickly. I live here and it took me 4 months to get my connections. We have a PSD team contact who brings us these Iraqi cuties but dangerous it is.

  • It seems the tide is against me and they are sending some units back to Iraq together with yours truly. I just want to gauge if GZ or around the area has changed since 03. Want to know the monger scene if GI's can still get plenty of poontang since we are always on a lockdown mode.

  • I don't think that one could obtain entrance to the cat-house that I found without being accompanied by an Iraqi who is close to the owner--I think the guy who owns the place is the brother of my driver. I tried to go back solo and the IP would not let me in the complex. I may have been lucky by finding some whores but I sure as hell was not three days ago when my convoy was shot up. This place is not for me--no matter how many hazard, post, and 6th day bumps I get. My first foray out into the Red Zone—or the National Zone as it’s now called —will be my last. Good luck to all you men that remain.

  • Damn the IED's, anal sex with Persian girls makes it worth it.
Scenario: China invades the U.S. on a false pretense. As society collapses during the botched occupation, Chinese troops and civilian contractors post excitedly on the internet, speculating about our various religions and the implications for personal hygiene and trading tips about all the desperate, formerly middle-class American women they've bagged for a few bucks a pop. You'd react how, exactly?

Anyone want to argue that our national soul, or what's left of it, can endure another five or ten years of this?

So what's new? I was in the service in Japan in the early '60s and it was the thing to do to have a young Japanese woman as a mistress for the 13 month tour and then to return home to the wife in America. It has been forty years plus since then and we seemed to have endured. We also did the same in Vietnam.

Oh, yes, the posting on the internet is new and it was shocking to read it as if the Iraqi women are merchandise, which to many it seems that is all they are. Isn't it wonderful to be saved from a dictator by America: you have you men killed and your women driven into prostitution.

When I was in the navy, the Pacific Fleet squids used to boast about the wonders of Subic Bay. It's always a source of mordant laughter when I hear people talk about how they want their kid to join the service "so he can learn good values". Even funnier is the notion that our global network of bases showcase the "good" side of America. The stuff described in the parent post was inevitable from the day we launched this fucked-up four year war crime.

One other thing -- the reason I'm keeping this post anonymous. I'm saddened when some 20-yr.-old from Nojobs Kansas or Unemployment Indiana gets killed or mangled in this big waste. Whether they signed on for a paycheck or out of honest to God patriotism, they're just naive kids in way over their heads.

But the guy who posted this "International Sex Guide" comment, the contractors, the Blackwater spooks and the rest of the mercenaries there? The more of them killed and maimed, the better. They're maggots, feeding on a fat corpse. Removing scavengers like them from the population is the only conceivable benefit this war can possibly bring.

...adendum: this isn't because I don't want to hear about this kind of thing on TCR, but rather, the dehumanizing board where these guys are discussing bargains to be had in fucked up war zones around the world...makes me want to put a bomb up my snatch and go to the Green Zone.

Certainly, I can understand the need for prostitutes (willing ones) but the sheer preditory, exploitive, selfish quality of the vibe on the linked site (looking for women with kids who are desparate for money and will do whatever) brings to mind some sick kind of dystopian "Handmaid's Tale" horrorscape.

Excuse me while I clean the vomit off my keyboard. Yeah, sure, this stuff went on in WWII, and probably always, but the next relative who tries to tell me that America's lonely duty and destiny is to be the world's policeman because of our superior morality, mercy, commitment to democracy and clarity of vision, is gonna get this article in the mail. We're no different from many other invading armies when you get down to brass tacks -- sure, we're more polite than Genghis Khan's army, but probably quite a bit cruder than Napoleon's... so this puffing and posturing about how our troops "spread democracy" and we "aren't interested in conquest" just makes me sick. When you're blown apart, you're blown apart, whether it's American cluster bombs or Nazi rockets; and rape of a country is rape of a country whether it's the Sabines or Iraqis. American Exceptionalism never ceases to amaze me.

Won't have to. Invading Iran will provide more than enough distraction.

5000 children died per month under Sadaam from starvation according to the UN. Maybe their mothers would have welcomed some good American sausage.

Power to the people!

Exactly what I hear all the time from people who have never been in a war or a famine. So -- we went into Iraq to close down Sadaam's rape rooms, and things are soooooooooo much better now that their women are being paid eight bucks a pop. That fixes everything, huh? Because those Blackwater mercenaries are really thinking about Democracy when they're out "find[ing] ass in the IZ".
Apart from (or maybe part and parcel of) American Exceptionalism, another thing that always amazes me is the tendency of Free-Market Fanatics to believe that unless someone is literally holding a gun to a market participant's head, then any choice that person ends up making is a "free choice" epitomizing "freedom" (e.g., the use of the words "consenting adults"). Come to think of it, probably some of these women _do_ have guns held to their heads, but as long as they get their eight smackaroonies afterwards, then that's not oppression, it's the beauty of the free market, baby!

I guess in five to ten years we're going to have to update the musical Miss Saigon to Miss Baghdad as well as deal with a whole new generation of "Bui-Doi." ("The term occurs in the successful 1989 musical Miss Saigon. It refers to the children the US GI's left behind, and touches very strongly on the situation the Americans left behind.")

It was our blockade that starved the Iraqi people....actually it was more lack of basic medical supplies and an inability to sanitize water due to our chemical embargo...but whatever.

This is horrifying reading but it just shows the predatory nature of human beings. Americans watch many Hollywood movies and believe the good guy always wins and that the core of society is good and civilized. It is all BS of course. Our society has nice window dressing but at the core we are as evil as everybody else. Philippines, Okinawa...hell follow a group of Navy guys from San Diego on leave in Tijuana. This is what human life is all about. Power and control. If you have it...you exploit it to your advantage. There is really nothing that can be done about it. I'm not defending it, I'm just acknowledging it. I am a huge Ron Paul fan because he could actually do something about our predatory nature. I won't bother voting because he doesn't have a chance to win. His message is attractive to the best Americans but this is at most 20 percent (being incredibly generous). He understands our corruption is about power being consolidated in the hands of the few. He understands our 500 billion dollar military industrial complex is the source or our evil. All the Democrats are willing to offer is the promise that we will manage this power a bit less evil than the Republicans. The vast majority of Americans do not want to give up our giant military because they are attracted to power. The sheep are always attracted to power. It makes them feel safe. If it was up to me, I would burn down Washington DC tomorrow and disband the military. As far as defending myself against the dreaded Muslim Terrorists...I own a .45 and a rifle and any Muslim terrorists that come to try and takeover Northwest Ohio I will be happy to defend against or die trying (LOL...what a joke...what cowards Americans are). Americans' biggest enemies are the people wearing 1000 dollar suits going to work in DC everyday. I know many Liberals read these pages and are offended by Ron Paul because he doesn’t believe in abortion or Social Security or Medicare but please...Our federal government spends the Lion’s share of our tax dollars and borrows even more to support a giant military and overseas military bases that terrorize a huge portion of the Earth’s population. It is a monstrous evil that you pay for and support. Hillary Clinton and Barrack Obama both are promoting a larger military and action against Iran and Pakistan. They plan on continuing our political establishment’s policies (I word it that way because the differences between the parties are window dressing). Ron Paul has made it clear that ending our predatory foreign policy is his number one priority. Liberals who want to do good in this world should probably concentrate on ending this monstrous evil before worrying about whether they will have to help out with Mom and Dad’s retirement and medical expenses.

Well said Goldhorder. I am what most would consider a liberal, but I have a strong libertarian streak. Ron Paul is to me an attractive candidate because he makes so much sense on foreign policy. I don't agree with him on abolishing Social Security or the IRS. But we do spend way too much on "defense" and mess with other countries too much. It is the messing with other countries that has made us a target for terrorism.

So I say go ahead and vote for him! Just write him in! I think the act of voting is as important as who you vote for. I will be writing in Mr. Paul or Gravel or Kucinich. Anyone who doesn't buy into the militarism, really.

Oh, and one other thing. I don't think people are naturally evil. We make choices. We often choose the path of least resistance because, obviously, it's easier. But I heard a quote from a movie once (can't remember which) that was, "You'll find that the easy thing to do and the right thing to do are often not the same." I think this is true.

From a primal standpoint, it's easier to hit someone over the head and take his food than it is to go out and forage it yourself. But this is short term thinking (we do a lot of that). For, as we all know, you reap what you sow. You put violence in, you get violence out. This is where selfishness can be leveraged.

I'm sure we'd all agree that people are generally selfish. So if people can be shown that it is in their self-interest, in the long run, to not take the easy path, they will be more likely to do that out of self-interest. They will be more likely to do the right thing than the easy thing. It's not about good and evil. It's about making better choices.

This makes me wonder why they can't get volunteers for Iraq. I mean, cheap sex. Erotic, dirt cheap and raunchy objectifying. What American man couldn't go for some of that? Sure, the risks are great. You might lose your head (in the wrong way) or be killed or maimed by an IED or inbound rocket, but what's not to like about a little danger? Not quite the same as risking a shot in the ass from her daddy's shotgun after jumping out the bedroom window in a rush, but adventure is adventure, right?

War, isn't it lovely?

come on TCR - this story is pretty standard stuff in a war zone. The prostitute rating web site is a product of our age - it's amazing what worlds the web opens up.

I'd like to hear more of what you think "our national soul" is - NOT being smarmy here - do countries have souls? Especially big 300- million-population-multi-ethnic ones? And how will we know when we've lost it?

Since most of the comments are seemed to be made by the male of our species I would like to add an opposite view point.

For one I doubt that the troops in Iraq have any access to prostitutes in Iraq, that why a female soldier has to guard herself against rape from a fellow soldier.

There was an article last year where they placed a latrine for females in a dark area so that when she had to go to the john at night she could be easily raped. This caused many of them to stop drinking water by the afternoon and a few them then died from dehydration.
The superiors naturally did not give a damn, they were only females.

I personally do not see much difference between our methods and that of the gestapo. Listening and reading about our actions in Iraq will insure that we will be loathed and hated in the middle east and elswhere for many decades to come. We really do not give a damn about an arab. Somebody in the state department has now been charged because he emailed and made phone calls to an arab organiation in dc, the mildest of them stated that the only good arab is a dead one.

That is our state department.

I wonder what would have happend if that statement, changed to reflect a different ethicity, was send to a jewish organization?

When I was young, stupid and breathtakingly naive, I thought that depressingly tremendous masses of people were miserable only because we hadn't yet figured out how to lift them out of said misery, or because someone hadn't been clever enough, or because mistakes had been made, or any reason other than that there exist people who inexplicably inhabit positions of power and influence who would cry like mad if they didn't have a ready supply of desperate people to exploit.

Whether it's the former middle class of another country forced into prostitution by national collapse, or an endless supply of immigrant workers who won't complain too much about unsafe working conditions for fear of being deported, a fair portion of The System is backed not by gold or silver, but by sheer, appalling human misery.

I think I may be turning into a Marxist.

This is the wonderful plan of the GOP. When it finally has run it's course we will have a democratic world. The down side naturally is that we will have destroyed the environment and killed off a lot of the underclass, but they were just cluttering up the place and taking resources away from Bush's friends.

To Kilfarsnar...I don't think people are naturally evil. I think all people are capable of doing both good and evil. I myself have done what I would consider evil things in my lifetime. When I finally recognized that I myself was capable of doing evil, I began to take my actions more seriously. I think it is necessary for people to make a habit out of consciously choosing to do good. By examing the decisions they make from day to day and asking themselves if their actions have tended to be good or tended to be bad and making adjustments. All of that is subjective of course but most people don't think about things. They react to things...they don't examine the consequences of their actions and therefore don't make adjustments in their behavior. Some people have been able to do live a moral life through religion but most religious people have not lived up to Jesus's teachings. I have a soft spot for religion but I honestly think it is at best a rough guide for learning how to live a moral life. Preachers and the bible thumpers are more like politicians than people to look up to for moral guidance. So where I think I found a good place for myself at this point in my life (school of hardknocks) I don't know how an entire society can be taught to be moral. There are too many bad influences in our public school system and our churches to straighten our culture out. I'm very pessimistic about our future.

Goldhorder,

Again, well said. If more people were to act deliberately, paying attention to the results of their actions, the world would be a better place. I don't know either how to teach a society to be moral. I too am pessimistic about our future. All we can do is try to live as an example to others and advise those who are willing to listen.

As far as I can tell, in the new and improved Iraq that we've crafted, Iraqis in general "are considered to be nothing". Have you noticed how, since the beginning, we don't even bother to keep a tally of their dead?

And imagine the fate of the children there. Broken schools, broken public health systems, not even clean water for many of them. The only adult examples either forlorn and defeated, or ruthless and sadistic. We've got a word, "genocide", for the crime of destroying a race. What's the word for destroying a society?

Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Wolofowitz, Perle -- the whole crowd. They deserve nothing but the scorn of the world, and they need to spend the rest of their lives in prison, or better yet, on the gallows.

China won't need to invade, they can just call in their chits and send their little emperors over to get some of that smelly American poontang. Widespread destitution and RMB appreciation will make it very affordable. Unprotected sex will command a premium, as always, and maybe favor young Republican pussy with purity-ball credentials. This will perpetuate income inequality so dear to right-wing hearts as the country as a whole gets suitably poor, accelerating the trend of recent years.
