Hysteria Watch

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed a sort of "growing militancy" out there over the past few days and weeks? In particular, the use of the word "nuclear" in the MSM is way up recently. Just a few examples:

1. As noted here last week, Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo proposes destroying Muslim holy sites including Mecca if terrorists use nuclear weapons against the U.S.

2. Ten days ago, we got this:
A senior Chinese general has warned that his country could destroy hundreds of American cities with nuclear weapons if the two nations clashed over Taiwan.

Major general Zhu Chenghu, a dean at the National Defence University, said he was expressing a private opinion, but his comments, the most inflammatory by a senior government official in 10 years, will fuel growing concerns in Washington about the rise of China. "War logic dictates that a weaker power needs to use maximum efforts to defeat a stronger rival," he was reported as saying by the New York Times. "If the Americans draw their missiles and position-guided ammunition on to the target zone on China's territory, I think we will have to respond with nuclear weapons."
3. This weekend we learned from this AP-Ipsos poll that six in ten Americans think World War III is likely.

4. This sketchy claim about possible terrorist plans involving nuclear weapons has been all over the internet for the past week.

To me all of this is troubling, because through repetition of language the unacceptable can become not only acceptable, but calmly expected.

What's going on here? Any thoughts?

Frustration with Iraq. Bad economy. Empire in search of next target. Idiocy.

On the China thing: really, what is our point with this one? Shoot, if some other country were to talk casually about tossing missiles at us over a matter that had no bearing on them whatsoever, I'd want them threatened with anihilation too, big whoop. It's a typical, and relatively rational, reaction.

This weird bipolar stance with them is just ridiculous. Either the Chinese are trading partners or an enemy, they cannot be both.

You forgot about the one where Cheney said we would nuke Iran.

HHHmmm... George Bush's preemptive war?

Rather than doing something to stop nuclear proliferation, this administration seems perfectly content to do everything it can to make it bigger.

Did you see where they manipulated and forged documents from Yucca mountain?

I watch Ted Tuner and Warren Buffet at NTI, or there is this site, FAS. This was a very education program or this one.

What a mixture, crackpot vengeful politicians and their base of religious fundamentalists that believe in armageddon.

We need really smart rational people that believe in science these days, and we got the antithesis. Holy mushroom
cloud Batman.

The Bush Admin has established a pattern of using bigger messes to get out of being accountable for less-big messes.

George Bush has a lifelong pattern of getting into trouble and waiting for someone to rescue him.

George Bush is also a self-proclaimed Tool of God.

All of which, combined, indicates the possibility of "nuking Iran" in the next 2-3 years.

Nuking Iran ushers in WWIII, no question; and also gives Bush an opportunity to destroy the last vestiges of democracy in the US by declaring himself War Leader Maximus for Life By the Grace of God.

Starts with a whisper (a Rove specialty), becomes a conversation, builds to a rant, ends with a whimper. Unfortunately, a whimper in this context could be the last sound you hear.

Yeah, you missed the bit about Cheney ordering the Pentagon to come up for war plans with Iran, including tactical nukes, should we have another terrorist attack here.

Amazing to think that something relatively minor like some bombs in the subway and these loons would be nuking Iran in 12 hours. Don't forget they wanted to attack Iraq within hours of 9/11. It would provide a useful distraction from Iraq, the mediocre economy, and Rove's looming indictment.

But I don't think the neocons are really going to be happy until they get us in a war with China. That's what they really want. The Middle East is a bit of a sideshow.

"Father, why are all the children weeping?
They are merely crying son
O, are they merely crying, father?
Yes, true weeping is yet to come"

Things are much worse than we want to believe.

The question is really will our distructive behavior against the environment kill us before religous extrimision on OUR SIDE - our president sits at the RIGHT SIDE of Jesus and therefore can do no WRONG - lead us into armagedon which seems to be the desire of this government.

Religous wars have throughout history been the most vicious and bloodthirsty. Now we have a president that really does not like democracy and all it stands for, but is interested in establishing a evangalistic theocracy called the USA. When the people will finally realize this it will be to late. Once religion has joined you in bed - especially an intolerant one like we have today it is here to stay and the brutality and viciousness we see at guatmo will become normal.
That kind of world will not last long. I doubt we will have 20 years left.
I weep for the young children who will never have a chance to grow up and live.

WHAT HAS HAPPEND TO THE TEACHINGS OF JESUS IN THIS COUNTRY.

Creating need.

Seems to me what we have here is a mutual need on both sides. It seems to be primarily republicans that need to have a demon that they can protect us from. Or perhaps a military foe versus financial(democrats). The same I think can be said of the Chinese. The leaders keep their power the same way. Mutually assured demonism.

In regards to anonymous' post about the environment and religious wars I want to offer that I believe like anything these two things are related.

As our environment and weather and natural patterns have become more extreme so too have our own instincts. Extremism is not just in the middle east. It is in our hearts and in Mother Nature as well.

The solution to this, to me, is to re-establish our link to the earth at the most fundamental level and that is to have discussions and research as to what is the most appropriate human population for given areas. It all starts and ends there.
