A Page Out Of The Old Playbook

At their meeting, Mr. Bush and Mr. Blair candidly expressed their doubts that chemical, biological or nuclear weapons would be found in Iraq in the coming weeks, the memo said. The president spoke as if an invasion was unavoidable. The two leaders discussed a timetable for the war, details of the military campaign and plans for the aftermath of the war.

Without much elaboration, the memo also says the president raised three possible ways of provoking a confrontation. Since they were first reported last month, neither the White House nor the British government has discussed them.

"The U.S. was thinking of flying U2 reconnaissance aircraft with fighter cover over Iraq, painted in U.N. colours," the memo says, attributing the idea to Mr. Bush. "If Saddam fired on them, he would be in breach."

New York Times, 3/27/06

6. Use of MIG type aircraft by US pilots could provide additional provocation. Harassment of civil air, attacks on surface shipping and destruction of US military drone aircraft by MIG type planes would be useful as complementary actions. An F-86 properly painted would convince air passengers that they saw a Cuban MIG, especially if the pilot of the transport were to announce such fact. The primary drawback to this suggestion appears to be the security risk inherent in obtaining or modifying an aircraft. However, reasonable copies of the MIG could be produced from US resources in about three months.

8. It is possible to create an incident which will demonstrate convincingly that a Cuban aircraft has attacked and shot down a chartered civil airliner enroute from the United States to Jamaica, Guatemala, Panama or Venezuela. The destination would be chosen only to cause the flight plan route to cross Cuba. The passengers could be a group of college students off on a holiday or any grouping of persons with a common interest to support chartering a non-scheduled flight. An aircraft at Eglin AFB would be painted and numbered as an exact duplicate for a civil registered aircraft belonging to a CIA proprietary organization in the Miami area. At a designated time the duplicate would be substituted for the actual civil aircraft and would be loaded with the selected passengers, all boarded under carefully prepared aliases. The actual registered aircraft would be converted to a drone.

Excerpts from "Memorandum for the Secretary of Defense, Subject: Justification for U.S. Military Intervention in Cuba," written by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and labeled "Top Secret Special Handling NOFORN," dated 3/13/62, pages 9-10. Original document viewable in the National Security Archive here.

Outstanding!

Why didn't we do it? It would have been great to have another controversy now to reduce our prestige and quesiton our leadership.

In the run-up to the invasion of Iraq, (most of) our nation’s jingoistic journalists were blinded by all that Neocon propaganda served by the Pentagon’s PR & Propaganda Dept

And as much as I have no sympathy for today’s MSM appeasers and other pinko obfuscators, I’m afraid the Neocon media still aren’t less parsimonious with the truth.

Take Fox News or the New York Sun for the sake of argument: the latter recently published yet another article purporting to “prove” the existence of secret links between the Iraqi Baath party and Al Qaeda- see link below:
Saddam, Al Qaeda Did Collaborate, Documents Show

However, reading the article in question only “reveals” that:
“The document has no official stamps or markers”
“The question of future cooperation [between Saddam and Bin Laden] is left an open question”
“New documents […] did not prove Saddam Hussein played a role in any way in plotting the attacks of September 11, 2001”

Funny how after their Iraq debacle, the Neocons haven’t stopped peddling the tall tale of Saddam’s alleged “connections” with OBL: the Leninist thugs of Washington are decidedly obsessed with Saddam and the Baath party…even after they’ve been rendered inoffensive- assuming they ever posed a threat to America any other country.

Bush, Cheney & Co. have always lied about the nature of the Iraqi regime, repeatedly accusing Saddam Hussein of being an Islamic fundamentalist in cahoots with Osama Bin Laden and the Taleban: unfortunately, after having been bombarded with fabricated infomercials produced by Israeli “Middle-East experts”, the American public eventually came to believe exactly what the Neocon wanted: that Saddam was kind of a later days bloodthirsty Saracen, on the verge of conquering the Infidel pastures of Wyoming and Oklahoma!

Yet, as we now know, the truth is otherwise: there never were any “links” between the Baath party and Al Qaeda, no spooky “secret meetings” in Vienna or Prague or “somewhere in Eastern Europe” between “Saddam’s diplomatic envoy and Bin Laden’s righthand man” as Vice-President Dick Cheney had alleged on numerous occasions

In Fact, Saddam Hussein was a staunchly secular Arab nationalist, a disciple of professor Mitchell Aflaq, the French-educated Orthodox Christian philosopher. And, if anything, Christian minorities and women were generally overrepresented in Saddam’s government: Vice-President Tareq Hanna Aziz was actually Catholic and so were Saddam’s Chief of Staff and many of the senior civil servants working at the presidential palace.

And check out this article for a fascinating firsthand description of Saddam’s Tickrit “spider hole” hideout:
“Pinned to the outside wall of the hut was a cardboard box depicting biblical scenes such as the Last Supper and the Madonna and child with the English inscription "God bless our home." Inside the bedroom was a 2003 calendar in Arabic with a colorful depiction of Noah's Ark. Soldiers were surprised at the Christian decorations”

Yes these US soldiers were “surprised” after having been brainwashed about Saddam’s penchant for Islamic fundamentalism…which turned out to be just another lie churned out by Washington’s Neo-Conmintern propaganda factory.

Like him or not, Saddam Hussein was a truly modernist, Westernized Arab head of state who protected women’s rights and enforced affirmative action programs in favor of Iraq’s tiny Christian minority. “Old Europe’s” foreign policy establishment viewed the Iraqi Baath party essentially as a strong bulwark against both Persian-Khomeinist fundamentalism and Wahhabi-Afghan terrorism.

The Israelis and Washington’s Neocons thought otherwise: now we have to deal with the strictures of Sharia Law in Afghanistan, the rise of Hamas and the Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI) which they have deliberately brought to power…

Yeah, yeah, yeah. They found more Al Qaeda-Saddam Hussein links. Even today's NY Post editorial about the documents wondered why these documents were showing up now.

I clipped Saturday's article in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel about the Pentagon's report on the Russians supposedly giving info on US troop movements to the Iraqis. This 210-page waste of time probably cost the US taxpayers a couple of million and seemingly was produced by the same third-rate propaganda artists that claimed a Christmas card from an Iraqi intelligence officer to a Russian one meant something ominous.

Remember the bullshit stories from the the UK Telegraph and San Fran Examiner about their reporters rifling the files at the Iraqi Ministry of Intelligence undisturbed the CIA or anyone else in the middle of a war? All on their own, these brilliant reporters found more evidence of the complicity of, I forget, the Russian, the French, or some other country on the necon blacklist. The proof just popped right out of those Iraqi filing cabinets!

Phil Bronstein, owner of the Examiner, had the frigging balls to go on CNN and brag about his paper's scoop. He should hang his head in shame, imo.

If you get a chance, read the article on the Pentagon's Russian report. The one I read was by Peter Speigel and Greg Miller of the LA Times. Interesting to note that the report claims that the Russians had someone inside Centcom who passed info to them.

How many different ways can anyone invade Baghdad from the south anyway?

One of these days, the Defense Department and the CIA will wake up and realize just how much the Russians hate us for what we did to them in the '90s. Do these guys have a clue as to what the Russians have been up to in the last few years? Me, I'm on the side of the Russians here so I've been trying to help out when I can.

The Sun-Sentinel also had an accompanying AP article with excerpts from the report about Saddam Hussein's manangement style. Hilarious. The Joint Chiefs of Staff are dead wrong aboout Saddam Hussein and the Iraqi military. Saddam knew that he couldn't win in the short term but he knew long term that the Americans wouldn't stand for a lot of casualties. I'd say Saddam was dead right.

What the Joint Chiefs of Staff left out of the report was the part about the CIA buying off the Iraqi military before the war but the Iraqi military doublecrossed us.

Somone needs to get a hold of the Iraqi Minister of Information's doctor son in Ireland or at least, his pre-war telephone and travel records. Dollars to doughnuts, the CIA worked out a deal with the minister.

C.R., I posted a 9/11 story at the TPM Cafe that might interest you. It is about how the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) went into action on 9/11. It has eyewitness accounts from people who heard the plane flying overhead before it crashed into the Pentagon.

The part about how the Navy including some admirals were able to get back in business quickly using VDOT computers and facilites is fascinating.

The VDOT apparently knew about the second plane heading its way. I'm not up on that part of the 9/11 timeline so I don't know if that is news to anyone.

I was struck by the difference in reaction to the attacks in New York and Washington. I don't think most New Yorkers thought that the nation was under attack.

Sad to say that the Brits are generally the only ones with courage enough to come out with documents like this at this time, when they are most needed. Unfortunate as this is to think and believe about our own government: I truly believe there is a document like this about the Anthrax attacks somewhere in our country. 'We need to pass the Patriot act. What are our options to get Congress and the people to go along with it?'

nathan, Ask C.R. if I can re-post my anthrax comment that he deleted. I think the anthrax attack was about $6 billion that Congress spent on bio-defense after the attacks but I also think the victims were specifically targeted.

CR, you are not the first to hearken back to Operation Northwoods as a parallel to recent events. The film "Loose Change 2nd Edition" begins with a voice-over recounting the plan's details, taken from the same paragraphs that you quote. The corresponding visiual image is a cover page with Lemnitzer's name on it. "Loose Change" contends that 9/11 was, like Northwoods, a "false flag" operation, intended to provide the "catastrophic and catalyzing event -- like a new Pearl Harbor" that the PNAC's 2000 report posited as necessary to accelerate the rise of US imperial militarism, a new "Pax Americana." Le plus ca change le plus ca le meme chose.

FIA, CR,

The “great communicators” of the PR & Propaganda section of Washington’s Conmintern are jumping around in glee, exhibiting Moussaoui’s suicidal “full confessions” as proof of their wisdom and further justification of “why we fight in Iraq and Afghanistan” [sic]

Zach Moose’s theatrical self-indictment will no doubt contribute to the neurotic atmosphere of mass hysteria that the Neocon have been fostering methodically with their jingoistic “analyses” of 9-11, Islam, Arabism…etc. Expect an avalanche of jingoistic we-told-you-Ayyrabz-were-savages editorials in the columns of the National Review and the Weekly Standard!

How an inoffensive (except maybe for himself!) unstable Moroccan prole eager to get his proverbial 5 minutes of glory through the grandiloquent use of outlandish statements and other “jihadist verbiages” can attract the attention of so many “conservative” minds shows the extent to which conservatism, once the ideological home of our nation’s virile and rational minds, has become of sub-ideology of sensationalist pussies and other Neocon carpetbaggers…

C.R., I just lost another lengthy comment when I hit "login and publish". It's one thing when you delete my posts, at least you read them but it's quite another when the comment never gets anywhere.

The big one that disappeared on me a couple of weeks ago was about 9/11, the FBI and court records being altered. I almost felt like someone didn't want my comment on the internet and no, I'm not paranoid.

Today's comment, albeit lengthy, was pretty innocuous. It was about Central American countries other than Costa Rica attracting people like me to their countries. I think El Salvador, Nicarauga, Guatemala etc are missing the boat by not going after the LIRR engineers.

Have you had any other complaints about the system? I think I will have to copy my comment before posting from now on.

One problem with this otherwise brilliant analysis:

Iraq had been shooting at US/UK planes for years, why the need to "re-paint" a U-2 in order to get shot at (again)?
