Gratuitous Headline Of The Year Award

Did a double-take on this one when I saw it -- thought it might be a spoof.

"I'm focused on getting everything done I can get done between now and January 19th."

Translation: By Januaray 19th, I will have screwed up everything that I could possibly screw up.

Cue the tinfoil hat brigade who will tell us that a national emergency will prompt the indefinite postponement of the presidential election.

January 18th will be a long day of shredding docs and wiping hard drives. Probably has his January 20th ticket to Paraguay already.

Too overt. The illusion must be maintained, or average people might notice and start asking questions. Besides, who is president doesn't matter that much.

The idea has been floated that Paulson could, and should stay on, no matter who wins the election. The thinking is that now that another Wall Street insiders insider has the Treasury, and indirectly the Fed, it would just be super boffo if he could stay there to help the boys out. It could happen, at least if McCain wins, it seems to me.

There is so much left to be done. The credit and banking crisis is getting worse and worse. The general outline of what Hank has done is to put the Treasury, ie. the taxpayers, on the hook for every bad piece of paper possible. Sadly for him he has only scratched the surface. The companion of that is to arrange the sale of the good assets at fire sale prices, to all comers. It would be nice if they were American but we don't have the money. Still his boys on Wall Street can make some good coin arranging the sales.

No matter who wins another Street guy will have to take over, in order to maintain 'confidence'.
