I did not expect this from William Buckley and respect his honesty now. What took him so long?
Keeping Iraq secure was never a priority. That was obvious from the moment the looting started right after "Mission Accomplished." Rumsfeld shrugged his shoulders as if looting was the most normal thing in the world. It was the first sign that we did not have the situation under control.
In retrospect, it was probably an impossible mission. Iran being so close would always have interfered.
It's not just that securing Iraq was not a priority, but rather that chaos was the desired outcome all along. That way, we are there permanently to keep the oil flowing and protect Israel. To blame it instead on incompetence is to presume that everyone with significant power in this situation was an ideologically blinded fool. Of course it's obvious that Bush is, but are Rumsfeld and Cheney really that stupid? ("yes" is not an inconceivable answer here...)
I wager half a week's pay that EVEN IF Iraq descended into a civil war and American troops had to flee like in Vietnam, Bush and the Neocons (with Buckley providing press cover) would declare total victory.
What the Sunnis and Shia should do is call a secret one-month truce. Put on a big 'We are the World' type celebration so that Bush and the Americans will think all is good and pull out. Then they can go about their business of settlin' the scores.
I can't help but think of these "adults" as cons of another color. After all, where were Buckley and his ilk at the start of this current adventure? Even more important, where were they when our foreign policy consisted entirely of "he may be an a$$&ole but he' our a$$&ole" in the cold war era?
I have to second the second Semper Fubar comment. If Buckley is an adult on Iraq for recognizing that we failed to achieve our supposed aims there, then Dean is owed a big fucking apology from Buckley, Greg D., Francis F. and all the other "adult" Republicans who are just getting around to understanding just what has been done in our name.
I have been following a site now for almost 2 years and I have found it to be both reliable and profitable. They post daily and their stock trades have been beating the indexes easily.

Whatever happened to "doing the right thing"?
Just watch, Bushco will ultimately steal Buckley's vision call it their own and wonder what all the fuss is about.
