Chavez Hysteria Watch....

Today, CNBC's "Squawk Box Poll" asked viewers the following: "When it comes to Hugo Chavez, which is worse? His bark or his bite?" Accompanying the poll: "Squawk Box wonders whether socialist talk by Venezuela's president will be backed by anti-U.S. action."

In the wake of the worst May for the S&P 500 since 1984, it's no surprise that a business news channel would focus on a desperately needed scapegoat like Hugo Chavez.

A perfect microcosm of what happens when an economy rolls over over, external "enemies" become more important, and a nation slowly loses its collective mind....

I wonder if the average Roman citizen felt at all like this while Nero "strummed".

"Slowly loses its collective mind"? I thought everyone went out to lunch five yeas ago.

In response to 9/11, the Defense Department seriously considered bombing South America.

In 2002, Baghdad was like Grand Central Station. All of the major networks were there in April 2002. At least a dozen members of Congress went there. Several trade fairs were held for the international business community. Egypt, our ally, was a major Iraqi business trading partner and India was doing brisk business there.

If you were in the CIA then, wouldn't you try to make contact senior members of the Iraqi government and military yourself or through an intermediary like your pals in Egyptian intelligence? Me, I would have offered $10, $20 or even $30 million for the list of names of scientists and engineers building nuclear and chemical weapons and where the facilities were located.

Either the CIA never thought of my idea or there were no takers. If there were no takers, the CIA either concluded there were no nuclear or chemicial weapons programs or high-ranking members of the Iraqi government were incorruptible even in the face of a US invasion.

If the CIA never offered to pay for information about Iraq's weapons programs in 2002, the CIA is incompetent or there was a foregone conclusion about Iraq's weapons.

Remember, according to the 9/11 Commission's report, Khalid Sheik Mohammed was an employee of a US ally, the government of Qatar,in the'90s. In 1996, he left Qatar for Afghanistan because the US authorities were supposedly after him.Conveniently, that's about the time Osama bin Laden shifted to Afghanistan.

Khalid Sheik Mohammed remained an independent operator but after meeting bin Laden, he kept pitching his ideas for terrorist attacks to bin Laden until the 9/11 attack plan was approved in 1999.

You and I have never seen or heard Khalid Sheik Mohammed. The 9/11 Commission never laid eyes on him nor was the Commission permitted to interview his interrogators.

How do you know Khalid Sheik Mohammed is a prisoner? Or that he even exists?
Because the Bush administration told you about him?

Who benefits? The first question asked in a murder investigation.

After dropping its disgraceful pursuit of Dr. Steven Hatfill in its futile attempt to nail him for the anthrax murders, the FBI began querying companies in the US as to whether they had anthrax spores on hand on 9/11 and whether they would profit from another anthrax attack.

9/11 gave virtually unlimited power and funding to the Bush adminstration to conduct military and intelligence operations anywhere in the world in the name of the War on Terror. Close to a trillion dollars has been spent for national security here and abroad.

The Bush administration adamantly opposed a public inquiry into 9/11. The president did not want you or me to know anything about 9/11, the worst terrorist attack in US history.

If I remember correctly, that was the brainchild of Doug Feith. I don't know if that was his entry to win the coveted "fucking stupidest guy on the face of the earth" title, but it couldn't have hurt.

I think that the real reason that Chavez resurfaced on CNBC because he spent millions of dollars to host this year's OPEC summit while critical infrastructure (like a highway bridge that connects the airport to the capital) lies in ruins. Chavez also wants OPEC to cut production so as to keep oil prices high, if not make them go higher.

Granted I did not see Squawk Box this morning, but I don't have to tell you that Chavez oil rumblings are a legitimate news story for the likes of CNBC. The price of oil affects everything in business as you know.

While Larry Kudlow may be a stoolie for neocon aggression, the rest of the network isn't (That's FOX's job). They're focused on what affects Wall Street, though they do fall for the red herrings often enough.

sglover, LOL - Yeah, it was Douglas Feith. I took a little liberty with the facts to hang the "Bomb South America" idea on the entire DoD. Feith, according to the 9/11 Commission, was disappointed at the bombing and ground options in Afghanistan and suggested a non-Al Qaeda target such as Iraq. He thought we could really surprise the terrorists if we struck at targets outside the Middle East such as South America and Southeast Asia.

Tommy Franks may be right about how f**king stupid Feith is but Feith led the DoD's successful propaganda campaign to convince Americans to support an invasion of Iraq, a country with no air force.

Feith was a threat to our national security because he considered the Israeli military to be entitled to know everything about our military and intelligence operations as if the Israelis were one with the US. The Israelis walked around the Pentagon like they were in charge.

ded, I think I read yesterday or the day before that Hugo and the Iranians entered into a joint agreement to build a refinery which would be the first new one in decades.

Hugo's relationship with Iran is a real sticking point for the Bush administraton as his relationship with Castro. Spreading socialism throughout South America is making him popular either. Me, I like Hugo but I don't see him as having a long career.

Here's the Fox media for you:

Olbermann exposes O'Reilly on Malmedy

If they'll go to this extent, what wouldn't they lie about (and remove from the transcript)?
