A Separate Peace

Fourth, we're determined to deny terrorist networks control of any nation, or territory within a nation. So, along with our coalition and the Iraqi government, we'll stop the terrorists from taking control of Iraq, and establishing a new safe haven from which to attack America and the free world. And we're working with friends and allies to deny the terrorists the enclaves they seek to establish in ungoverned areas across the world. By helping governments reclaim full sovereign control over their territory, we make ourselves more secure.

President Bush 9/5/06

Can folks really continue to think that free countries can negotiate a separate peace with terrorists?

Donald Rumsfeld 8/29/06

Osama bin Laden, America's most wanted man, will not face capture in Pakistan if he agrees to lead a "peaceful life," Pakistani officials tell ABC News.

The surprising announcement comes as Pakistani army officials announced they were pulling their troops out of the North Waziristan region as part of a "peace deal" with the Taliban.

If he is in Pakistan, bin Laden "would not be taken into custody," Major General Shaukat Sultan Khan told ABC News in a telephone interview, "as long as one is being like a peaceful citizen."

In addition to the pullout of Pakistani troops, the "peace agreement" between Pakistan and the Taliban also provides for the Pakistani army to return captured Taliban weapons and prisoners.

"What this means is that the Taliban and al Qaeda leadership have effectively carved out a sanctuary inside Pakistan," said ABC News consultant Richard Clarke, the former White House counter-terrorism director.

The agreement was signed on the same day President Bush said the United States was working with its allies "to deny terrorists the enclaves they seek to establish in ungoverned areas across the world."

"They're throwing the towel," said Alexis Debat, who is a Senior Fellow at the Nixon Center and an ABC News consultant. "They're giving al Qaeda and the Taliban a blank check and saying essentially make yourselves at home in the tribal areas," Debat said.

Truth be told, the WH has a ton of rhetoric to throw around but no plan. The claims of being strong and stoic in the face of opposition is just another Rove creation. Reality is pulling the paper mache off of this rotton pinata, leaving a hollow paper shell for the world to see.

CR,

Get real. We ain't got time for stories like this. Didn't you hear the news yesterday?

*Redstone dumped Freston over at Viacom (Joe on CNBC said he felt the earth shaking-- "don't ya feel it?").
*Ford is doing their 3rd restructuring in as many years, and in some numerology-linked twist, using their 3rd choice to lead the battle (their first two choices laughed and hung up on Bill Ford). I mean, hello!, this IS one of the biggest mainstream media advertisers on the planet!
*Pictures of the Tom Cruise baby hit news stands. nuff said.
*Traders returned from the Hamptons, bringing the big guns to bear on the market; Dow up 5 in brisk trading... well not so brisk (we learned later: returning "A-list traders" usually need that first Tuesday back to get their sea legs, so we'll see fireworks today... tomorrow at the latest).

I think you need a sounding board for what you choose to focus on, maybe a fellow blogger, a confidant. Someone that can help you keep things in context. Nobody cares about some godforsaken corner of Pakistan.

I give this announcement a lifetime of, ummmm, let's see, 36 hours.

Within that time, somebody from the Bush [so-called] Administration will notice that this contradicts all their rhetoric for the past 5 years, ...(funny how they never see these discrepancies in advance, only in hindsight)... Bush and Condi will get on the phone to (a) the MSM, and (b) the Pakistanis... and within the 36-hour mark, we will see three or four stories in the news media about Progress in the Hunt for Bin Laden, and the DoD will stage a press conference where a Pakistani official will describe their extremely aggressive steps to locate bin Laden (after the DoD Media Relations officer pulls the string in his back).

...aaaaaaand, voila! Problem solved, at least until after the midterms.

Aw damn, the invasion queue keeps getting longer. First we gotta clear out Iran, then we gotta re-engineer Syria, now we're gonna have to fix Pakistan! At this rate, it's gonna take us to the end of the year to bring democracy to the residents of Southwest Asia. Jeez, all this freedom-spreading might even go on into 2007!

Doesn't matter if this contradicts previous rhetoric it only matters to keep Musharif in power because he is likely to be the friendlies leader of Pakistan the U.S. is likely to see. That trumps everything. Any anyway this is SOP for the Bush administration. There are many cases where what they saay/d now directly contradits what was said/done before.

They get away with it because most reporters, either print of TV, don't bother to go back and if they do they either don't say anything (for several reasons) or recognize the change for what it is. It is left to bloggers to point these kinds of things out. Of course they are then dismissed as partisan or worse.

The Islamic world wants democracy about as much as the Eskimos want refrigerators. We are told that we are fighting a war on terrorism...isn't terrorism a tactic? We need to go after the root cause of this cancerous manifestation Islam itself. We need to repudiate the teachings of their prophet maniac. During world war II we never won the war by attacking the SS. We went after the source Nazism, its leaders, its teaching and we defeated eveything attached to it. When the people of the world wake-up to the fact that WE ARE AT WAR WITH ISLAM...we might have then the courage to tell the truth about its lone prophet. Muhammad was a terrorist, slave trader, murderer, pervert and a liar. Who in their right mind would sell their soul to a maniac like him.

the brits are much more skillful...discussion by straw about speaking without veils, some minor court case about teaching veiled...successful propaganda should start from a point at which many will just nod in agreement....you build up 'they are different' first before you go to 'they are dangerous and must be nuked'...the us jump started the whole 'islamofacist' in a messy, ill considered manner...
