Did He Pay A Broker's Fee?

Check out the primitive surroundings, appropriate for someone on the run. Note particularly the mud-caked walls. And how about the dirty clothes and disheveled appearance?

Still "marginalized" after all these years....

"NBC News has obtained new images of Sept. 11 hijackers Mohammed Atta and Ziad Jarrah delivering what is apparently their last will and testament in Afghanistan on Jan. 18, 2000, as well as images of a rogue's gallery of other terrorists and senior al-Qaida leaders listening to a speech days earlier by Osama bin Laden at his Tarnak Farms compound in Afghanistan on Jan. 8, 2000."

"Earlier, The Times reported that it obtained a copy of the videotape that is the original source for these still photos. The videotape was recorded without any audio, and FBI and Pentagon officials tell NBC News that they used Arabic linguists to try to lip-read the tape — especially the martyrdom speeches by Atta and Jarrah. The lip-reading effort was largely fruitless, the officials say."

"In another clip, a group of men are seen sitting on the ground, laughing and talking. Several minutes later, bin Laden walks to the front of the group and gives a speech."

So, we're supposed to overlook the premise that this was a 'last will and testament' from two alleged terrorists, featuring a speech by OBL, and yet they didn't record audio?

Bullshit.

I've closed the link and it's late... But Laura Mansfield noted that the second part of his video was filmed in a much more primative setting. She speculates a lot on that and thinks it shows a logistical weakness and maybe even "on the run". I think the former is right but the latter is wishful thinking at this point. Peter Bergen has noted that Zawahiri is on a two week lag for commenting on recent events. That lag is evident with the lower quality remarks on the Pope. They may have had to rush the second aspect of the tape. But, you can pull a anti-Laura Mansfield and infer that they can spend a great deal of time planning these tapes and their release. ... Hardly a broken movement.

What is worrying is the "chummy" video of Atta and Jarrah (sp?). I think that is intended to target disenchanted Western Muslims to the al Qaeda banner.

While I can't comment on the clothes, the background does appear to be imposed after the taping. I see a haze around the soft edge of his beard which implies to me that he was in front of a blue screen of sorts to make this video.

If that were true, then Al Qaeda may be getting better in post-production than we first thought. :O(
