Till We Drop
Is it just me, or was the post-Thanksgiving media hype about "shopping" greater than usual this year? For the past few days I've seen blanket coverage, to a degree that clearly meets the standard of bizarre. On Friday, I saw a CNN anchor interview a "foreign policy expert" (the names of both escape me) who confided breezily that immediately after the segment -- during which he opined on the escalating violence in Iraq -- he was headed out to shop.
It seems almost as if the country has decided (along with its titular Decider, as this blogger observes) to forget about the civil war underway on its watch in another part of the word, and to take refuge in the salve of "stuff."
Alas, some reality here and here.

Shopping is Satan's work.
WaPo had an article today about how there were fewer people in the few days post Turkey Day but that they spent more with an accompany picture of several men with several DVD players among a palet full of electronics.
They're working hard to hype "Cyber Monday" as well, despite my suspicion that it will pan out to be considerably weaker than last year. [I see two reasons for this: first, more people have speedy Internet access at home than in previous years, and second, people are concerned about their online activities being monitored by their employers] Methinks they're trying to keep the economy afloat and keep people distracted at the same time, by conveying that shopping is the patriotic thing to do.
felicity to georgy...

It feels as if it's been unusually strong in Britain, too; my brother and I both recounted feeling that we were being told Christmas was just around the corner, that we ought to have finished buying presents already ... by temperament I do my Christmas shopping in bookshops on 23 December, in order to give me another day in case inspiration has completely failed to strike.
HDTVs seem a particularly perfect example of a conspicuous-consumption item; they're still far too expensive to justify, but I feel the discourse is starting to switch to the point that it's expected that people will have one.
Reading up this cyber monday - which I hadn't heard of - only to discover it was just invented? Those marketing are really trying to work for their money. Of course the news people have totally bought into it and are using "cyber monday" like they use "black Friday" - i.e. everyone should know what this means.
Some group did a study "The Myth of Cyber Monday" to show how it is all bunch of hooey.

Or, perhaps people are getting less certain of what's to come tomorrow, and thus are trying to enjoy themselves to the fullest, today, while they still can.
Sounds too bleak...let's just enjoy the holidays anyway!
