Worthy Of A Bit More Attention, I'd Say

Before resuming my previously-noted downtime, here's an interesting story from the weekend (HT: TPM):
Terrorism charges brought Friday against the administrator of a loan investment program claimed that he secretly tried to send $152,000 to the Middle East to buy equipment such as night vision goggles for a terrorist training camp in Afghanistan.

Abdul Tawala Ibn Ali Alishtari, 53, of Ardsley, N.Y., pleaded not guilty in U.S. District Court in Manhattan to an indictment accusing him of terrorism financing, material support of terrorism and other charges. The charges carried a potential penalty of 95 years in prison.

The indictment said Alishtari tried to support terrorists between June and December by accepting an unspecified amount of money to transfer $152,000 that he believed was being sent to Pakistan and Afghanistan to support an Afghanistan terrorist training camp.

He believed the money would be used to fund the purchase of night vision goggles and other equipment, the indictment said.

CBS News has confirmed that Alishtari is a donor to the Republican Party, as he claims on his curriculum vitae. Alishtari gave $15,500 to the National Republican Campaign Committee between 2002 and 2004, according to Federal Election Commission records. That amount includes $13,000 in 2003, a year when he claims to have been named NRCC New York State Businessman of the Year.

Alishtari also claims to be a lifetime member of the National Republican Senate Committee's Inner Circle, which the NRCC describes as "an impressive cross-section of American society – community leaders, business executives, entrepreneurs, retirees, and sports and entertainment celebrities – all of whom hold a deep interest in our nation's prosperity and security."
Now check out this CV posted by someone with the same name (note: I have no idea if it's authentic or represents the same person) which notes a 2003 appointment to the "White House Business Advisory Committee."

Note the entrepreneurial business background with a focus on technology/security. Have any of those businesses ever received government contracts or funds? Any direct or indirect contact in the past with anyone from the Bush administration or Congress?

Update: Ah, what a tangled web. A reader notes in the comments section that "GlobalProtector.Net", one of the companies listed on this CV, claimed to have "provided a product demonstration for the United States SouthCom in Miami, Florida." Here's the news release. A few months later, according to another news release here, "Chief Executive Officer Mr. AT Alishtari authorized a new Boca Raton, Florida Office sales team of under a new Federal Sales EVP with web technical support from GlobalProtector.Net’s Chief Technical Group Director, Mr. Romel Roberts, to meet with the US Department of Defense covering web filter technology for various uses internally and those meetings were met favorably in general for the agenda set forth by the Department of Defense for those items."

Both of those news releases are from 2003 -- the same year this person says he was appointed to the "White House Business Advisory Committee" and became a "US National Republican Senate Inner Circle Member for Life."

Oh, and be sure to check out this news release, noting particularly the references to "anthrax patents" and "Homeland Security."

White House press corps, over to you....

Time to exhume Joseph McCarthy, form a committee and start calling in some Republicans. "Are you now or have you ever been associated with a terrorist?" It would seem to me that the Grand Ole Party is harboring terrorists hellbent on the destruction of our fine nation. At least this is what the Republican Congress would have done if the wolf was caught in Hilary's herd. I wonder how Faux News is covering this one.........

The more you think about this story, the more you have to wonder what was really going on here.

"The indictment said Alishtari tried to support terrorists ... by accepting an unspecified amount of money... that he believed was being sent...

He believed the money would be used ... the indictment said." (Italics mine.)

Here is a person who had to know that, given the combination of his name and his apparent business, he would be closely watched. Unless he is a monumental fool, (not out of the question,) there is a lot more to the story of how he got to this point.

Was this a sting operation? Was he set up by...whom? Even if not set up, he apparently merely believed he was in contact with genuine terrorists or their funding channels.

And if he is truly sympathetic to terrorists, why would a person who has apparently begun to win the confidence of the defense contracting establishment, not to mention the Republican political establishment, risk a terrific intel/sabotage/PR opportunity by sending mere money to terrorists?

This one bears watching.

A few more data points:

1) Note that the address for A Safe Place Inc. is the same as for IDPixie LLC,

205 BOULDER RIDGE ROAD
SCARSDALE, NEW YORK, 10583

As the Google satellite photo shows, this is a residential property (in a very tony neighborhood abutting a country club/golf course, I might add).

2) The Bronx address for FEDI, Inc. is a building classified as O7 (professional building) by the City of New York property record.

3) FEDI occupies suite 313, and seems to have run into a spot of trouble with Canadian securities regulators. Their phone number shows up in various searches as (718) 601-1245.

4) "GLOBAL PROTECTANT.NET" [sic x 2] gave $1,000 to the NRCCC on 10/9/02. In the same document, one also finds NRCCC contributions from Alishtari (twice) and -- wait for it -- the foreign office of FEDI Inc.

There is a lot more information in various files on the http://groups.msn.com/atalishtarispeeches/... site you pointed out. Click on "General" - postings somehow stopped last week (wonder why?). This is the same person as in the indictment. Most of it is rambling, but odd pieces like this one: http://groups.msn.com/atalishtarispeeches/general.msnw?action=get_message&mview=0&ID_Message=3232&LastModified=4675605175938089078
Don't have time, but someone might want to look at all that stuff.

I am glad TPM picked this up as well. I kindof figured if it got posted there digging like this by his readers would begin.

This story should have had legs all on it's own. Where the frick is the media on all of this?

What is curious is this cat claims to have set up the Global Peace Film Festival, Inc. with a $400,000 grant in 03. The grant seems to have come from a charitable foundation of his, but in his blog he seems awfully coy about the name of this foundation. (Of course, the foundation could exist only in Alishtari's imagination. But then where'd the money come from to set up in the Film Festival?) I'd think this foundation could be the key to whether there is any more to this strange tale.

Yeah, yeah, that's all very interesting, but don't you realize that Britney shaved her head? There's only so much time to cover the important news, ya know.

No, no, no, you don't understand. The storyline goes like this. People who contribute to the Republican Party are beyond moral reproach, (e.g. Ken Lay), until such time as their guilt can be proven in court. When that occurs, then they never have contributed to the Republican Party in the first place, and nobody in the White House has ever dealt with them or met with them. Understand? It's really quite simple. Next time please check with your friendly neighborhood propaganda officer before posting such an obviously false story.

Your revisionism and moral equivalence falls short; as usual.

ONE RNC minor contributor gets indicted, (Note: Indicted; Not convicted-"Let's count all the votes and do push-polling Commie Network News to make sure"-morons) and you are all atwitter with impeachment wet dreams.

All this would be hilarious if not for the fact that all of this was made inevitable while your buddy Billy-Buuba was sticking his pud in some fat chick instead of keeping guard of our nation.

If you want to get comparative, at least Clinton wasn't stuck on page 7 of 'My Pet Goat' during the GREATEST FAILURE OF U.S. AIR DEFENSES ever.
