Age Of Diminished Expectations

One of the top national news stories right now: no disastrous system breakdowns for travelers during the past few days. We mobilized as a nation and made it happen.

"Many airlines, stung by lawmakers and a public furious with record-low on-time performance, beefed up customer service and operations teams."

Hold on a minute, could... could... could adequate staffing actually help?

This could be a major breakthrough for the airline industry.

I think the more pertinent story is Matt Wald's (also in NY Times, linked from the other): http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/22/us/22herndon.html?ref=us

While it would be interesting to know just what services and "lubricants to the system" the added airline customer service and ops teams provided, what really makes the difference is the air traffic control system's ability to keep the very full (as George Hamlin observed in the story originally linked by CR) airplanes moving from destination to destination. Decent weather and some mechanical good fortune always helps, as does the apparent trend towards adding another day (tuesday) to the Thanksgiving travel window.
