"Maybe Signing Some Things"

The goal of these Sunni extremists is to remake the entire Muslim world in their radical image. In pursuit of their imperial aims, these extremists say there can be no compromise or dialogue with those they call "infidels" -- a category that includes America, the world's free nations, Jews, and all Muslims who reject their extreme vision of Islam. They reject the possibility of peaceful coexistence with the free world. Again, hear the words of Osama bin Laden earlier this year: "Death is better than living on this Earth with the unbelievers among us."

These radicals have declared their uncompromising hostility to freedom. It is foolish to think that you can negotiate with them.

U.S. military commanders are talking with Iraqi militants about cease- fires and other arrangements to try to stop the violence, the No. 2 American commander said Thursday.

Lt. Gen. Raymond Odierno said he has authorized commanders to reach out to militants, tribes, religious leaders and others in the country that has been gripped by violence from a range of fronts including insurgents, sectarian rivals and common criminals.

"We are talking about cease-fires, and maybe signing some things that say they won't conduct operations against the government of Iraq or against coalition forces.," Odierno told Pentagon reporters in a video conference from Baghdad.

Lowering expectations seems to be the summertime propaganda ploy.

Bush recently warned of a bloody summer and Odierno now is stating that September is too early to see any progress.

Rove has reminded us that new "marketing campaigns" are rolled out only after Labor Day.

Stay tuned, I'm sure we'll be regaled with a duesey of a new plan in September.

I am beginning to see not much of a difference between the German Army after Hitler came into power and the Army/Dep of Defence that we now have in this country.

The GOP feels that the military are their loyal slaves so they can do with them want they want and the military will continue to kiss their feet.

For this the troops will end up in a meat grinder and be ground slowly and surely into mincemeat. Either they will come home dead, or physically missing a few parts or so damaged emontionally or mentally that it will be impossible for them to lead happy and fruitfull lives.

But why should the gongho Republicans give a damn. They got what they wanted out of them and the what is left over can be "thrown away".

Far be it from me to seem to be defending these guys, but maybe this is just Odierno's way of describing their latest effort to take advantage of the antipathy between Al Qaeda factions and other Sunni groups. This would fit right in with the nuance-free way our spokesmen have tended to lump all of these groups together as "insurgents", "militants", "terrorists", "dead-enders", etc. While it may be long overdue, this may not be as ridiculous and hypocritical as your juxtaposition of quotes implies.
