"There Doesn't Seem To Be A Recession In Belgravia"

Bloomberg's Richard Vines:

Bankers Start Feasting Again at London Eateries, Chefs Say

I spoke to almost 30 of the U.K. capital’s leading restaurateurs last week. Here’s what they say. ...

Marcus Wareing (Marcus Wareing): “How’s business? You’re joking aren’t you? It’s mad. I’ve had a fabulous year.” ...

Michel Roux Jr. (Le Gavroche): “Business is good. We’re full every lunch all the way through to January and very few slots are available in the evening." ...

Gary Rhodes (Rhodes Twenty Four, Rhodes W1): “We’ve seen a small movement of the bankers being more tempted to come out for lunch. Dinner is no problem: We’re full." ...

Peter Prescott (Boundary, Lutyens): “Next week is looking like the strongest we’ve ever had." ...

David Moore (Pied a Terre, L’Autre Pied): “We’re having our best month of the year. It’s back to pre-meltdown." ...

Michelle McGuire (Palm): “Three weeks ago, Palm had its busiest week since opening in May, with record takings. Weekends are well up in both revenue and customer numbers, which indicates that personal spending is on the rise, too. There doesn’t seem to be a recession in Belgravia.”

Francesco Mazzei (L’Anima): “There was a dramatic improvement in mid-September. Things are much better than a year ago. People are spending good money on wine, and we’ve sold 2.5 kilograms of white truffles. The bankers are back." ...

Angela Hartnett (Murano, York & Albany): “Murano is full lunch and dinner and York & Albany has doubled since the summer. It’s doing my head in." ...

Of course prosperity existed for some, and was to be seen on the surface. Those eating well in restaurants were those who could afford to eat well in restaurants.

Last week I tried getting Tuesday night reservations a week in advance for a party of 8 at Eleven Madison Park. Nothing was available, including the private rooms, until 9:45. (And, btw, my party is a group of commercial bankers from a bank that did not receive TARP money, but did receive AIG money.)

The looting continues.

ALOHA !!

It all depends on where you are in relation to the "money spigot". That fact has not changed in thousands of years. In Medieval times you were better off being the court jester than living as a peasant. The closer you were to the King in the Kings Court the more favors you could potentially acquire. You cannot acquire any wealth just tilling soil miles away from the castle.

Naturally in this modern era the MONEY SPIGOT is in Washington DC. Where else in America can you find as many "court jesters"?

NYC where the trillion run like salmon through the NYSE and FX is where the money is. Ask any IT guy and he will tell you Silicone Valley, places like Palo Alto and San Jose are where the high tech jobs are. Even the secretary at EBay and Google are wealthy.

Come on out to the rural Hawaii here on the Big Island and I can get you in at any restaurant at any time of day! My favorite? The Kalapana Cafe. Just don't mind the sign there at the order window that says "NO EBT"!

Kaimu, i'm in NYC, you can get into any really good local joint no problem . The higher end places, which the article discusses (in London), are probably packed as usual. I'll leave those dressed up chain restaurants (which is EXACTLY what most of them are) to the people who have money to waste. Wow, Chang opened another Momofuko! He once again charges $30 for what you can get, better, in Chinatown for $4! Let's wait on line!

You come to NYC, i'll get you the best $4.00 sandwich you've ever had. No wait.

As for the article, it's just another way of saying, "the stock market is heading back up, the recession is over."

And the dust gathers on the barricades.

Hankest.
