Getting Out The Vote
Last week, the Federal Reserve released the transcripts of its meetings from 2000 (the Fed releases its transcripts with a lag of at least five years). This may say something about me, but I've found that transcripts of Fed meetings from almost six years ago can make for interesting reading. Here's an exchange from the November 2000 meeting (page 94 of the transcript) which took place against the backdrop of the Florida recount in the presidential election:
Chicago Fed President Michael Moskow (joking about the possibility of a recount of the Fed's decision on rates): "And finally, I just want to say that if there is going to be a recount, I would like to speak first because those of us in Chicago know how to handle recounts!"
Chairman Alan Greenspan: "I've heard that if you rig the numbers in the beginning, you won't have to do a recount."

TCR, i'm guessing you're not married yet :) otherwise u'd NOT be reading Greenie from circa 2000
but, i must admit, that is a great comment he made.
i'm single as such i downloaded and will read the entire document.
May say something about you......?
As to the other point, Greenspan is saying something about himself by that comment as much as reading the whole thing says something about you.
"This may say something about me, but I've found that transcripts of Fed meetings from almost six years ago can make for interesting reading. Here's an exchange from the November 2000 meeting (page 94 of the transcript)..."
Speaks volumes, actually.
I'd like to see Greenspan pen a book about his view on the political situation during his tenure...without ever commenting on the economics.
That would be a worthwhile read.
Why would anyone assume these people were joking? Often my bosses in the office use a grin and a chuckle to make bad news go down easier.
In view of the fact that Greenspan was entirely on Bush's bandwagon, I have to think that his remark, even if delivered jokingly, was dead serious. As the linked article points out:
..the numbers [of visits to the White House] indicate "a stunning rise and increase in the level of communication, and one [can] only wonder what they were talking about..."
and
"There's the appearance that [Greenspan] might not just be affected by economic winds, but possibly by political winds.."

Since Greenspan was an Ayn Rand disciple, would you put anything past him? I know I've heard some very unflattering Rand/Greenspan stories.
