Visiting Old Friends

I did a double-take when I saw this report. My initial thought was he must be shooting a new episode of "War Stories" -- written, directed by, and starring himself.

I've had past investments in the natural resources sector in Nicaragua, and a few colleagues of mine are still invested there. I just got more glad my money's out. While it's true that a return to power by Ortega would be less than desirable, Oliver North careening around Managua will make it more likely and will poison the post-election environment for U.S. interests should Ortega win. But when the circus is in town, the only sin is to be a clown without an act, eh?

Two things, I'm not the least suprised that North could say Nicaragua has already suffered from outside influences...and saying it with no hint of self-incrimination and a straight face. Second, too bad Clinton just didn't say he "didn't recall" having sex with Monica. Hey, it would have worked for Reagan.

"He [North] said Nicaragua had suffered enough from the influence of outsiders."

Dear god, no shame, none at all.

I've spent a bit of time in Nicaragua, the economy is doing better, but most people there are missing out on it. When the majority of a nation are left out of an economic boom (in Nicaragua's case, perhaps an economic peep) and the nation has the vote, one can predict who they majority will vote for - anyone who promises to go after the rich.

Chavez won. Ortega may win. If the Nicaraguan ruling class doesn't want nut jobs like Danny running their nation, they should try to spread the wealth a bit.

Just what we need, another rehash of Oliver North writing a newspaper column and arguing that State Department officials have erred in criticizing the ruling party because of its leader, Arnoldo Aleman, who has been convicted of corruption charges. He argued that the party has the best chance to keep Ortega from the presidency. I guess only time will tell if what Oliver says is correct.

You see...

The problem with Bill Clinton...

was that he actually answered the question...

rather than just 'not recall' Miss Lewinsky.

Memory loss is so Republican, however.

They let him in? I mean, if it was to arrest, try, convict, and execute him, then by all means hand him a passport.

I guess that, if Ortega is elected, then him putting the current administration of Nicaragua to deatch for treason would be actually valid and just.
