David Halberstam Killed....

Readers know I've quoted him often during the past few months. He was certainly one of the most insightful, compelling observers of Americana ever. The NYT report is here.

He will be missed. I wonder who will write about the Iraq mess like he wrote about Vietnam.

Big loss. I read his "War in the Time of Peace" several years ago.

TCR's excerpts from "B&B" have shown great insight in the present debacle.

Is there any chance that Halberstam's life and death might get at least 1% of the "news" coverage that the MSM devoted to Anna Nicole Smith at the time of her death?

No.

Another simple answer to another stupid question. (Apologies to Atrios.)

I still remember being inspired by B&B in high school...those stories about McG. Bundy at Harvard, reading his final from a blank sheet of paper and still getting an 'A'...

If Vietnam turned into such a bloody debacle despite the tender ministrations of the best eggheads in their day, then what hope do we have in Iraq, engineered as it was by the Worst & the Witless?
