Dolchstoss Watch

Rowan Scarborough:

A senior Pentagon official said an Obama swearing-in "will give the Arab street the final victory, the best optics, and the ultimate in bragging rights. They win. We lose."

During the past five years, the U.S. military has enjoyed sacred cow status. One might wonder if that's warranted, given that our military leadership -- as opposed to the troops doing the actual fighting -- hasn't exactly covered itself in glory with a stalemated, open-ended occupation in Iraq and a rapidly disintegrating situation in Afghanistan. Assuming Scarborough's source is military (a reasonable assumption given the article's title) it appears some in uniform are willing to abuse that status and take sides for November. It's not as if they have anything else to do, I guess. Consider it a small but ominous sign on the road to Scapegoat City. Kevin Baker's 2006 article in Harper's gets more relevant:

Every state must have its enemies. Great powers must have especially monstrous foes. Above all, these foes must arise from within, for national pride does not admit that a great nation can be defeated by any outside force.

They're terrified of him. And, in a strange way, they need him.

In a strange way, we all need Barack Hussein Obama. He's the chain smoking, coke snorting black guy who went to a not-so-great college for two years. With a little luck, he just might prove to the rest of the world that anyone can really can be president of the United States.

I was in the Dollar Store here in Coconut Creek FL earlier today and the latest books by John Ashcroft and Pat Buchanan were on sale for a buck. I took it as a sign that conservatism is so over.

The Swift Boat Vets taught us Dems a lesson. McCain isn't going to get away with being a war hero just because he got caught by the Viet Cong. He's going to have to answer for the charges that he was a reckless flyboy.

And Cindy, his babe-i-licious wife? I suspect that we are going to have a national debate as to whether Americans are ready to accept a mentally disabled, brain damaged First Lady. Cindy can't remember what she did last week as a result of brain damage from her 2004 stroke.

The McCains are old and worn out and depressing just like the GOP.

Is anyone surprised that the long time treasurer of the National Republican Congressional Committee forged an audit report?

Tonight, I fell in love with Barry O. when he came out for corporate tax breaks for US investments but not foreign ones. If a corporation wants to invest in a Communist dictatorship like China, fine. But I shouldn't have to subsidize it.

You go, Barry O!

Not so strange. They need to be terrified of something and their image of him meets their requirements.

In a way, I'll bet the collapse of the Soviet Union was traumatic for these folks as well as the USSR. Thank God for the rise of existential-threat bigger-than-Nazis "Islamofascism", huh? Bonus: they don't look like us!

Why is it strange? BushCo. has politicized everything they can. Look at Petraeus? He goes on Faux Noise regularly. Why not Air America or some other such place? Heck, he's been on Faux a lot more than the Big Three. Whomever wins(Barack or Hillary) will need to do a thorough cleaning of government. I am sure Bush/Darth Cheney will try and leave a lot of moles to continue their dirty work. They need to empty the military of the fundies too.

William Buckley died yesterday. May the conservative movement die along with him.

That's the way (modern) conservatism works. Whoever wins the Dem nomination is Public Enemy Number One. The patriotism of nonconservatives is routinely impugned. Scurrilous narratives emerge that never, ever die (HRC murdered several people; Obama refuses to pledge allegiance to the flag . . . ). MSM pundits "euphemize" these narratives (e.g., Kristol's recent column on Obama, which lays out the plan of attack now that HRC seems to be losing her grip on the nomination -- come to think of it, I don't know what Dowd, Collins, Rich, Sullivan are going to do with all their snark once HRC is out of the running . . . ). The anger and resentment and fear help keep intellectual honesty and accountability at arm's length. And, of course, they help keep Republicans in power. Or they HAVE helped do this over the past several years.

The motto: Ask not how conservatism has failed you; ask how you have failed conservatism.

BTW, I don't particularly blame the military leadership for our difficulties in Afghanistan and Iraq. (Though their acquiescence in the routinization of torture sickens me.) The ultimate responsibility lies with the White House -- after all, no military in the world can implant "democracy."

The USSA never has such problems anymore. How does a nation with no national resources run such a fantastic economy? Although Hong Kong isn't perfect, it is a far cry closer to a free market economy than ours.

A different Pentagon official said an Obama swearing-in "will give the American street the final victory, the best optics, and the ultimate in possible futures. Rather than less jobs and more wars, we could begin to shake off the tyranny of the last 8 years of authoritarian strangulation. Now THAT would be some bragging rights. We win. They lose."
