Man With A Plan?

From the AP today:
Military officials told President Bush on Sunday that the U.S. needs a national plan to coordinate search and rescue efforts following natural disasters or terrorist attacks.

Bush got an update about the federal hurricane response from military leaders at Randolph Air Force Base. He heard from Lt. Gen. Robert Clark, joint military task force commander for Hurricane Rita, and Maj. Gen. John White, a task force member, who described search and rescue operations after Hurricane Katrina as a "train wreck."

With Katrina, "we knew the coordination piece was a problem," White said. He said better coordination is needed to prevent five helicopters, for example, from showing up to rescue the same individual. "With Rita, we had the benefit of time. We may not have that time in an earthquake scenario or similar incident," White said.

"With a national plan, we'll have a quick jump-start and an opportunity to save more people," White said.

Speaking of the helicopter example, White said, "That's the sort of simplistic thing we'd like to avoid." He added, "We're not maximizing the use of forces to the best efficiency. Certainly that was a train wreck that we saw in New Orleans."

Bush thanked White for his recommendations.

"This is precisely the kind of information I'll take back to Washington to help all of us understand how to do a better job," the president said.
And so the main question raised by Katrina continues to be: Just what the hell have we been doing for the past four years?

Former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill's comment about "kids rolling around on the lawn" looks more prescient all the time. Can the lawn take another three years?

nope, we can't.

look, these fat babys have had 5 yrs to completely deconstruct and pilfer the safeguards and tools put into practice by the government for service to it's people. when you look at the 9/11 commision report it is obvious that a major overhaul was not needed, but a simple reading of the facts and wariness on the part of our leadership. in other words, we needed grown ups who believe in national SERVICE! not what we suddenly had appointed to us.

every act of this admin has been a betrayal of the notion of government service to the people. 911 was the biggest boone bush could have ever had. and he ran with it like any spoiled kid who can turn on the tears to get his way. not that he used tears of his own, oh no, he used the tears and fears of a nation to do the extraordinary. he led a nation on a rabid and bloody warpath to destruction.

the idea of this admin coming up with more "plans" is ludicrous.

we've been planned into over 1000 deaths in the gulf coast that could've been avoided. the PLAN is all red tape and bullshit!

there was no full plan to deal with the 9/11 rescue attempts, and anyone who tells you there was is full of crap, and no PLAN lasts more than a few seconds in reality. what you had were people trained to do their job and dedicated to the communities they served, who went in and saved a hell of alot of others, knowing they might die. they listened to their immediates who were like themselves, they recvd aid from their brother and sisterhood throughout the nation who were likewise trained and dedicated and who were not hindered because of red tape and foolish adhearance to some unrealistic plan.

more would have been saved WITHOUT the fed government hindering, blocking and commandeering in the wake of katrina. more would have been saved if we had the FEMA we had had before bush!!!!!

and before you wag your jaws at that, take a look at the PLANNED exodus of the houston and galvaston areas of Tx. that was a disaster! and anyone who has any real EXPERIENCE and KNOWLEDGE of how disasters happen and ripple could see it coming.

there is a right way to do what needs to be done, and there is the wrong way, and bush and his neo con cronies are happily playing hopscotch on the wrong way express.

they haven't a clue!

Dear sir,

I just found your blog, and looked down the front page, and already, I am quite impressed! I have commented, several times, before, about how it is exciting to find traditionalist conservative sites in the Blogosphere - weblogs that are not beholded to the White House or party line, and especially those that oppose the Iraq war. It seems that as more and more people enter the Blogosphere, those types of sites are [fortunately] becoming less uncommon.

Who's going to ask the simple question of "what have we been doing the last 5 years to "make" this country safe"?
And, who is going to DEMAND an answer?
I'd guess, no one.

Ask your congress.

Actions speak louder than words. We are no better off today than we were before 9/11 (and worse with the Iraq war). The monies were used to feed Bush cronies and create political clout.

The Republican controlled congress has to take some blame here. Delay, Frist, Hastert control what gets to the floor for a vote. And they are abusing this power to the nth degree.

Someone from the 9/11 commission said, nothing has been implemented from their report. One example, remember the fire and police couldn't communicate on 9/11. One of the things rescue workers need for public safety is more spectrum (or satellite). Well, 4 years later and communications still stink.

So the Republican controlled congress is spending money on pork projects like drunken sailors, but Bush has not ONCE asked his majority party to stop; rein in the spending on pork, and set priorities. On the other hand, Bush has not once used his veto power (assuming he reads what he signs) to send a message.

Perhaps the funds to build a bridge in Alaska that goes no where could be less of a priority than say, setting and funding communication equipment standards and getting the resources so our first responders can communicate. I suppose Delay is waiting for a big sweaty wad of lobbyist money before he'll let something like this get to the floor.

"Can the lawn take another 3-years", is a very good question. I think it is going to get a lot worse, before it gets better. I think the corruption, cronyism, and incompetency goes deep, and is not only in this admin but Congress too. And let us not forget, even if good conservatives stood up for conservative values, that we have the evangelicals that only care about turning us into a theocracy; they don't care about fiscal accountability or good goverance. They just want an administration that will interfere with personal matters and keeps gays away; and when there is another disaster they'll blame the gays. It is strange who the Pat Robertson's have prevented good governance.

Dear Mr Norquist,

I've been wondering how the free market was supposed to get 2500 buses, 1,000,000 bottles of water per day, food, shelter, medical supplies, airlifts, funeral services, and communications to New Orleans in the absence of the support mechanisms that only the Federal Government has the resources and authority to put in place?

But congradulations, I think the government has been drowned. Too bad it couldn't have been shrunk first.

A government by those who hate government and don't know how to use it.

Hire a party buddy to screw up an important job, and then rehire him as a consultant to analyze the manner in which the job was screwed up? Sounds like a plan to me. Some folks are very dependent on ridiculously large paychecks to sustain their lifestyle, and plainly some lifestyles are more important than lives.

I'm voting for Roosevelt.
