What's Good For the Goose....

As Bush left for Camp David on Friday afternoon, he made the following statement to reporters outside the White House:
Special Counsel Fitzgerald's investigation and ongoing legal proceedings are serious, and now the proceedings -- the process moves into a new phase. In our system, each individual is presumed innocent and entitled to due process and a fair trial.
Anyone care to guess how Jose Padilla's attorney will start his next legal brief?

Kind of like the way the Supreme Court ruled that the Equal Protection Clause prohibits States from using "... standards for accepting or rejecting contested ballots [that] might vary not only from county to county but indeed within a single county..." (Bush v. Gore, 2000). Apply that same rule to juries applying standards differently from county to county- or within the same county- in death penalty cases and where does that leave you?

What do you know? I thought that me and the fellow at the Information Clearinghouse website were the only ones left who thought about Jose Padilla.

I read the court's opinion on Padilla and almost wrote to Michele Malkin about it but I caught myself in time.

As an aside, do most of the big right wingers not allow comments because so many people disagree with them? I tried to post one on the Captain's Quarters website and gave up. You needed to be screened, for pete's sakes, to make a comment about Able Danger.

I feel so sorry for Jose Padilla. He is never going to have a chance to defend himself. He could rot in jail for the next twenty years for all this government cares.

I don't know what Padilla did or didn't do but I certainly wouldn't rely on what a few Al Qaeda suspects said after being tortured. I know Padilla did not have a dirty bomb when he arrived in Chicago.

The story about him having dinner with Khalid Sheik Mohammed and the other big Al Qaeda suspects in Pakistan when they were all on the run did not ring true.

If Padilla was such a big fish, why did the US let him roam around Eqypt before he went to Chicago? Was someone following him? What big piece of intel came out of that operation?

No one ever said what happened to his supposed partner who was going to help Padilla blow up apartment buldings by turning on the gas stove in apartments that they would rent. Seeing that Padilla only had 10 grand when they picked him up at the airport, I didn't think he would get too far with that project.

There's every possibility that the DOJ trumped up the case. If you read the court's opinion, it relied heavily on the case of the Saudi American who started out as a world class terrorist that the US found in Afghanistan.

I forget his name but I'm guessing that the Saudi government intervened on his behalf because this world class terrorist got shipped to Saudi Arabia.

People don't think that what happened to Padilla could happen to them. They are wrong.

I bet people would be surprised to learn that here in Suffolk County Long Island, the cops dump people off at the mental hospital where they are held without any legal representation for as long as the hospital wants to keep them. No rights, no nothing.

LOL - After 9/11, I memorized Dominic Barbieri's phone number when I was writing critically about the government in a couple of forums. Not that I think Dominic is such a great lawyer but I thought I'd stand a better chance with the government if my case was aired on Howard Stern.

But Padilla is brown. And a former gang member. And an eeevil islamofascist. Each and every one of those categories is automatically (but silently) excluded from the treatment that white Christian Republican Scooter Libby gets.

Never mind that those aren't legal distinctions, or that in the 4th Circuit, as long as the Bush Administration says you're a terrorist, there is no right of Habeas Corpus for you. I haven't totted up the votes recently, but once the Padilla cast gets to the SCOTUS (again), I'm wondering if there will be Habeas Corpus anywhere in the US if the government claims you're a terrorist.

julie, I didn't realize that other people were following the Padilla case. I brought up Padilla's name to couple of people this weekend. While they didn't remember who Jose Padilla was at first, they agreed wholeheartedly that he is entitled to a trial.

To Malkin's credit, she at least posted a link to the Padilla opinion. I just didn't want to waste my time writing a letter so her highly paid secretary could read and delete it.

I suspect that Malkin is used as a testing ground for stories. Within the last couple of months, she had a link to a story about an Egyptian college student in Tennessee picked up for buying pilot manuals and a pilot's uniform with a credit card. The story sounded preposterous and I refused to even check out the link.

I suppose I should have just to see which paper is going along with this propaganda b.s.

I've gone back to reading the paper in hard copy because I got tired of letting every intelligence agency in the world know what stories I was reading.

julie - Oops! That last "anonymous" poster was me, 277fia.

chris, I'm a longtime Howard fan but an irregular listener. I assume that Howard is as interested in 9/11 as I am but I don't know how much 9/11 he can do on his show. I hope he didn't waste valuable time just airing the standard "no plane crashed into the Pentagon on 9/11" conspiracy theory.

LOL - Howard hasn't asked for my advice but if he wanted to conduct an on-air 9/11 investigation, he should make it fun and have his listeners participate.

I don't necessarily dismiss conspiracy theorists but I have been left wondering whether they are more interested in conjecture than facts.

Here's an example. After 9/11, I posted in the now-defunct NY Times Abuzz online forum. I liked the format and, at least initially, many of the participants were obviously intelligent. I found Abuzz on the NYT's online table of contents but for some reason, shortly after I became a member, the link was removed.

One of the members often went by the name "crusader bunnypants". Bunnypants was the in-house Abuzz conspiracy theorist who sometimes linked to very interesting news stories that I normally would have missed.

A favorite of Bunnypants was the "Israeli art students as spies" story which is or was a big feature on Antiwar.com. Carl Cameron of Fox News did a four-part story sometime around December 2001 about Israelis who posed as art students. The art students travelled around the US selling art to gain access to government facilities.

Accompanying the Carl Cameron story transcript online is a report purportedly prepared by the DEA on the art students. The report has been circulated all over the internet.

I wasn't terribly interested in the story but for fun, I checked out some of the names in the "DEA" report. Paragraph 98 referred to a "Peer Segalovitz" who supposedly was apprehended in Orlando FL. Peer apparently told the authorities that he had a brother, Dror Segalovitz, in Tamarac Fl who owned an art store.

I found an art company in Tamarac Fl, I D S Art Group, Inc. which listed a Dror Segalovich, not Dror Segalovitz, as the registered agent and president. I thought that Bunnypants would be excited at the news and I even offered to check out the location because I was going to Florida.

Bunnypants never even acknowledged my post and just kept ranting and raving about the Israelis. I wasn't about to stick my nose into something I didn't know anything about if no one else was interested so I never checked the Tamarac address.

I was interested in Charlie Gargano who I have written about here so I checked myself that Andros International Development had an office in Coral Springs FL.
I also checked the last address of Eagle Building Technologies.

Every once in awhile, I see a mention of the Israeli art student spy story and I think about the IDS Art Group. Someone went to a lot of trouble to circulate an Israeli spy story that had at least a grain of truth in it but I have no idea who or why.

I am pretty skeptical generally. I live on Long Island but couldn't bring myself to visit the WTC site for two years. I tried once in October 2001 but ended up spending the day in Jamaica Queens which, believe it or not, turned out to be a very comforting trip.

When I made the annual Christmas trip to a Bushwick cemetery in Brooklyn in December 2001 to decorate a family grave, I stood on the top of a hill and saw for myself that the WTC towers were no longer part of the skyline.

One of the nice features of Abuzz was that you could invite someone to read your post by emailing the invitation directly from Abuzz without using your own email address. As a member, you had the option of listing your own email address in your user profile.

LOL - I once posted in Abuzz about the Rev. Moon, the Washington Times which he owns and his investment in a North Korean car factory. I questioned criticism of North Korea in the Washington Times as being hypocritical.

I used to be a big fan of the official North Korean news service website, Korean Central News Agency at kcna.co.jp. The KCNA used to have a terrific writer who would put the United States in its place firmly and effectively on a regular basis.

The KCNA would describe US military operations in the area including the names of ships etc. It listed the names of foreign dignitaries visiting N. Korea, extended birthday greetings to world leaders and provided lots of information about N. Korean achievements in industry and science.

LOL - I sent a link to my Abuzz post about the Rev. Moon to the KCNA. I didn't get a response but shortly thereafter, a warning
appeared in a KCNA article to the effect that certain Christians should watch what they say. I was delighted!

I sent a link to another of my
Abuzz posts to what I thought was Al-Jazeera's offices in Qatar when I was trying to find out why James Baker and Edward Djernian were in Syria and Lebanon in June 1999. But no luck.

I would have loved to have asked
the folks at Al-Jazeera if they thought that Secretary of State Baker knew Saddam was going to invade Kuwait in 1990 and kept that fact to himself. I wasn't holding my breath waiting for April Glaspie to send me a secret message, that's for sure.

Back to the conspiracy theorists and the "no plane crashed into the Pentagon on 9/11" theory. It's not that I don't think that everyone at the Pentagon on 9/11 wouldn't conspire to keep a secret. Obviously, the American public has not been told the entire truth about the JFK assassination. Otherwise, there would not be government documents about the assassination that will only be revealed to the public in, I think, 2050.

My guess is the JFK assassination information is secret to "protect" the American public from the shock that Americans would assassinate their president. If I am right, it is one of the worst decisions in American history.

At the time of the assassination it was probably the right thing to do but the truth should have come out after a decent interval. Americans need to know how to defend their government from danger. If we don't know what danger can exist, we can't protect ourselves.

If I was Howard, I would send my listeners down to the gas station across the street from the Pentagon and ask the employees if they saw a plane crash into the Pentagon on 9/11. If there is something fishy about the plane flying into the Pentagon on 9/11, they know about it. You would hear a plane overhead if it flew as low as we were told.

If I worked in that gas station and saw something different than what the government offically put out, I wouldn't tell the government. I wouldn't tell the Washington Post either.

Everyone at the Washington Post knew that the Kuwaiti ambassador's daughter was the one who lied to Congress in November 1990 about the Iraqis tossing the babies out of the incubators but they never told me or the gas station employee.

Katherine Graham, the now-deceased
owner of the Washington Post and renowned DC hostess, has been quoted as saying that she thinks the government should keep secrets from the American public. Right off the bat, you have proof from her own lips that the owner of the major DC newspaper believes in lying.

From August 1990 on, attention in Washington DC would have been focused on the Kuwaiti ambassador.
Reporters would have been clamoring to interview him. And Ms. Graham would have wanted him to be her dinner guest.

Kuwait paid part of the Gulf War bill and payment would have been negotiated by the US government in advance of invasion. I imagine the State Department, headed by James Baker, handled payment terms and arrangements.

The State Department is also responsible for diplomatic relations and would certainly have known who the daughter of the ambassador to Kuwait was. The State Department knows the names of every member of every country's delegation and the names of their family members. It's the State Department's job.

President George H. W. Bush referred to the babies tossed out of the incubator story in speeches to drum up support for the Gulf War. Every sentence in a president's speech is vetted and fact-checked by his White House staff.

Tossing babies out of incubators is a horrifying crime and everyone I know would consider the perpetrator of such a heinous crime to be a monster. President George H. W. Bush's staff would have made darned sure the FBI and/or the CIA thoroughly checked the background of a person who made such a claim.

President George H. W. Bush knew he was telling a lie about Iraqi soldiers killing Kuwaiti babies but he lied anyway and the Washington DC press corps covered up for him.

I know I think a lot about who I trust. I have written here before about not trusting my local FBI office but I really haven't told the whole story.

My friend once bought a computer at a store that I knew couldn't be legitimate. The store made him think he bought a Pentium II but wrote the receipt up as an AMD II. I figured out that the processor was really an AMD I which made the computer obsolete the next day, instead of two days later.

My friend took advantage of the st
ore's offer of free financing for six months which he had done at other legitimate stores. But this was the only time that he got a call to confirm that he took possession of the computer. That meant the finance company didn't the store owners.

I helped my friend get a refund which was not easy. We made a lot of noise in the store about phony processors etc. We then went straight to CompUSA to buy a replacement and the salesman was impressed that we got the refund.

I wanted to report the store owners to the FBI because I had reason to believe that they were connected to the Russian mafia in Brooklyn. I was mad that these creeps were selling junk to working people who couldn't afford to go to a legitimate store.

But I was afraid that the FBI would drag my friend's name into an investigation. I am afraid of the Russian mafia and I wouldn't jeopardize the safety of my friend. I wasn't too thrilled at
the idea of putting myself at risk
either.

I waited more than a year and
finally wrote a signed letter to Henry Gilgoff, the consumer affairs columnist at Newsday. He had already written about this store and I trusted him to pass on information without giving my name. Shortly after I wrote my letter, the store closed and I never heard from Henry Gilgoff or the FBI.

In the mid-90s, my local FBI office was wiretapping a "social club" in Huntington Long Island.
One "Johnny Boy" Ambrosio was running an illegal gambling operation out of the club.
During the course of the investigation, the FBI heard someone at the club talk about crashing planes and the FBI investigated that person for two months.

It turned out to be a misunderstanding which was cleared up after the FBI interviewed the person. I know the person and his family and it made for a humourous story before 9/11.

After 9/11, I remembered the story and realized that my local FBI office took the idea of Americans flying planes into buildings very seriously long before 9/11.

One of my problems with my local FBI office now is that I think Charlie Gargano has influence over its investgations but this is not the post to discuss why.

Back to Howard - I think Howard's listeners are street-wise and would know that the gas station employees are not going to spill their guts to just anyone. But I bet Howard's listeners are smart enough to play "someone who knows someone...".

Hmmm...if Howard is talking about 9/11, maybe I should start listening again.

Once again, I have taken advantage of C.R.'s good nature to ramble on. I rambled on so much I don't have time to proof this post so my apologies to anyone who actually reads it.

BAGHDAD - Five hundred prisoners walked free from the U.S. military's Abu Ghraib jail in Iraq on Tuesday, released in a goodwill gesture to mark the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The detainees were presented with a Koran and $25 on their release which marked Eid al-Fitr celebrations. Their release was in addition to 1,000 prisoners set free in October at the start of the month of fasting.

According to recent news, the erectile dysfunction afflicted elderly people in Brazil were administered with free viagra and as a consequence they were miraculously cured of impotency. Doesn’t this news appear utterly surprising to you? But the man who is well aware of all the information on cheap viagra would never be surprised on hearing the news that the distribution of free viagra among the elderly Brazilian people suffering from sexual dysfunction has cured them of the deadly malady. But if you are not so fortunate to get hold of free Viagra, then you can buy viagra from an authentic source and cure your erectile dysfunction. The need of the hour is to browse through Viagra online, procure Viagra and treat your erectile dysfunction. But before you buy viagra online, it is necessary to consult the physician on your erectile dysfunction and take his necessary recommendations to treat the disease.
