Opportunity's Hard Knocks

If there's anyone left who doesn't understand that this White House not only welcomes the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel but wants it to continue (and indeed, expand), more from President Bush's weekend radio address:
"This moment of conflict in the Middle East is painful and tragic. Yet it is also a moment of opportunity for broader change in the region."
Via WaPo, Richard Haass responds:
"An opportunity?" Haass said with an incredulous tone. "Lord, spare me. I don't laugh a lot. That's the funniest thing I've heard in a long time. If this is an opportunity, what's Iraq? A once-in-a-lifetime chance?"

And Haass is not some anti-Bush political hack, rather, he was the State Dep't policy planner during Shrub's first term.

Can you imagine the administration publically critisizing Israel's destruction of the Beirut airport and public works after our systematic dismantling and occupation of Iraq? At the very least, Rice will slow-walk a ceasefire through the U.N. so as not to appear too much like the impulsive punishers that the Israeli's are.
Furthermore, I wouldn't put it past Israeli powerbrokers to use the soldiers kidnapping as an opportunity to create an international situation that would halt or slow U.S. troop reductions in Iraq. Let's face it, having 125,000 of your best friends in such close proximity to sworn enemies does wonders for public morale and administrative hutzpah.
