Big Mother Watch

This is the sort of thing that isn't a big deal, but still gives me the sign-of-the-times willies. Something about presenting your papers, taking your shoes off, being searched for illegal toothpaste and shampoo, then padding over to a state-sanctioned vaccination station with government employees pointing "that way for your shots" doesn't really appeal to me (and note plans to expand the range of shots and "tests").

One day people will probably be amazed that travel and basic medical care weren't always integrated ("you mean they used to go to doctors' offices?")....

Good post. Made me do some searches on it. The whole flu shot thing looks like a scam. Anything this well organized for the "public good" smells funny to me. It's either a huge money maker for the pharmas or preparation for something in the future.

Pretty dumb getting a vaccination shot before getting on a flight. As the article points out, the shot takes about two weeks to become effective -- so there's no immediate benefit to be gained.

However, there is always the chance of a side effect -- from mild to severe -- from the shot, even if a person has been getting flu shots for decades. Why put yourself at risk for a bad side effect mid-flight or post-arrival?

I have been trying to find out why the airlines are not required to sanitize in air in the planes.

I know the answer, it cost money. We know that flying tin cans are a vector for germs. Think of the cost of lower productivity, higher medical bills and lost wages; not the mention the health of air travelers, resulting from airborne diseases.

Cost would be minimal and as a frequent traveler I would not object to fee to keep me healthy.

As for the flu shots in the airport, so what? Why not the already offer them in pharmacies, drive-thrus and shopping malls.

Better people get a flu shot in public rather than no shot at all.

My word, Big Mother? Geebus. Someone tries some innovative stuff to get people to have a flu shot and the first reaction you have is that it's a nanny state?

Wow. It's a great reminder as to how we got into the current state we're in, where by proud conservatives were full behind George Bush - not because of his drunk driving arrest, not because of his rampant drug and alcohol abuse, not because of his stellar record of being rescued by daddy's business buddies in all the failed business ventures of this "MBA President". Nope, you were behind this idiot child because of your knee jerk reactions to pretty much anything liberal.

I think when y'all stop acting like third graders and figuring out that that life's a bit different than the way things used to work at the O.K. Corral, you might be making better political decisions in the future which won't end up with authoritarian assouls, ravaging our constitution and gutting our democracy.

Geebus. Mommy state, indeed.
