JAKOGERM Alert

No, not something festering in the nooks and crannies of Neverland Ranch. Instead, a new category here, one that will obviously pop up a lot in the remaining months of the campaign. "Jakogerm" refers to JapanKoreaGermany, John McCain's desperate template for a multi-decade Mesopotamian occupation. McCain today at Rice University:

"No American argues against our military presence in Korea or Japan or Germany or Kuwait or other places, or Turkey, because America is not receiving casualties."

Please send along any future alert material for this category that you come across. Help keep the JAKOGERM meter finely calibrated.

In addition to being grossly misleading as an analogy, it's not true. There are Americans who object to the US having permanent overseas military presences: some of them on fiscal grounds, some of them on isolationist grounds (e.g. Ron Paul supporters), some of them on anti-imperialist grounds (for the latter, see Chalmers Johnson).

Ron Paul is not an isolationist.

Other than that, i agree with you ahistorically

Hey yeah. Plainly our good treatment of Turkey is really paying off lately, isn't it? Who wouldn't want to be blessed with a loving "partner" like the U.S. of A?

I guess McCain wants to be remembered as a parody of himself. It's going to be grueling, watching him debase himself for no good reason over these next ten months.

i suppose most people still don't seem to get it if this was a cogent argument that's trying to appeal to his base, iraq was never about al qaeda, and arguing today that somehow we leave and it's about al qaeda "winning" is just more manipulation of fearmongering that got us into the problem in the first place. most of the violence in iraq is caused by local shiites, sunnis not al qaeda. and they were never there before the war started.
