What's Polled Is New Again
Isn't it interesting to see Republicans' sudden respect for public opinion? These days I don't do more than occasionally glance at most of the Right's main media outlets. But whenever I do, almost invariably I see the latest poll on Obama's overall approval rating ("will he break 50%?") or on healthcare reform (Americans voicing their disapproval by the millions!). During the Bush years, Republicans had a general contempt for public opinion and for the capacity of polls to capture what "most Americans" really thought. The president was "making the tough decisions" and "refused to govern according to the polls." Organized protests were ridiculed if they were acknowledged at all. If Cindy Sheehan started penning unintelligible rants about death panels and communism, how long would it take for Hannity's booker to call?
