Chimney Politics

Be sure to read Scott McConnell's post about the emerging "blacks on a rampage" theme (and Rod Dreher's related post here). He's right about the effect it had on the Dinkins mayoralty. I was a grad student at Columbia in the early 1990s, when the Central Park jogger attack was still fresh in the city's memory and racial tensions were high. Even among an intelligent, supposedly enlightened student body in a solidly liberal city, there was an unspoken fear of the avenging black hordes crossing 125th Street and marching up the hill into Morningside Heights and the Upper West Side. During the riots that followed the acquittals in the Rodney King case, I remember standing outside my off-campus apartment on 120th Street and looking north to Harlem. Smoke was rising from around 135th Street, and I worried about how close "that area" suddenly seemed. Would they decide to walk a few blocks south? When the smoke was still there the next day and the day after that, I realized it was coming from a chimney and probably had been for a long time.

The wilding/rampage meme is a powerful one, and some execrable characters on the Right know it. Get ready to hear about school bus spats and playground bloody noses for the next few years.

Reminds me of so many stories about suspicious characters on planes after 9/11.

Yeah, and weren't the members of the Central Park jogger rapist wolfpack later quietly acquitted?

It was tabloid cover gold for months.

They're having a field day with the whole ACORN thing too. I'm kind of amazed by the passionate fears a small, urban grass-roots affordable housing advocate organization has managed to generate.

Many of my right-leaning acquaintances are elevating ACORN to heights of power and influence that would be laughable, if it wasn't so predictably paranoid.

I read the original article and felt it should have a different title: "Once a N**gger, Always a N**gger". Why is Barack Obama responsible for the behavior of Kanye West? Is he responsible for Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers? David Hasselhof on a drunken bender? How about John McEnroe and Jimmy Connor? He was alive then too?

No. . . . . must be something else. You see, black people are damned if they do and damned if they don't. I didn't know we elected Barack Obama to monitor the behavior of Serena Williams. This is such preposterous racism, to even bring up the Central Park rape incident. I was in New York when that occurred, and I rarely it ever think about it now, let alone consider Barack Obama in light of it.

My greater concern is the violence of white wing racists who are stockpiling weapons and "take our country back" and who will most likely believe any sick rumor about black criminality, such as those reported as fact during Hurricane Katrina.

The groundwork is being laid for a violent, apocalyptic response to Obama's presidency. The seeds have been planted and are bearing little green shoots.
