Heart Of Darkness

One of our best goes "upriver" in Iraq, with tragic results. Be sure to read the whole article here.

I'd say that smelled an awful lot like paranoia, but look where we are now...

Nothing is shocking. Why would it be surprising that he was killed to prevent him from going public with information about private contractor fraud.

Well, if he was killed as part of a coverup, their methods stink, because obviously there was a whole lot of information left in the pipeline, easily accessible. That doesn't mean I don't think he was killed; I just think the whole thing reeks of profiteering incompetence. Whatever happened to reassigning troublemakers to the front lines? He would have appreciated that, actually, with his classical training....

The army shrink seemed to get with the game plan:

"Despite his intelligence, his ability to grasp the idea that profit is an important goal for people working in the private sector was surprisingly limited," wrote Lt. Col. Lisa Breitenbach. "He could not shift his mind-set from the military notion of completing a mission irrespective of cost, nor could he change his belief that doing the right thing because it was the right thing to do should be the sole motivator for businesses."

In other words, "He didn't understand that the modern military is supposed to be run like a corporation, and that everyone now gets a share of the pie so long as they go along with the whole thing."

Not to sound too cynical, but what are the chances that Col. Lisa has her eye on a nice consulting gig with a contractor once she retires? You know, the contractor the Army will hire to run its mental health facilities.

Perhaps only the tip of the iceberg. So much for Bush claiming to bring us decency and integrity :-(
More of the same, and worse!

This particular case sounds very suspicious. If you're an intelligent, educated, and a religious man, with a family, I hardly think you cut and run. You'd fight for them, so they would have a better world tomorrow.

No one, no country, has really addressed the issues surrounding the "private military".
When someone works for a "private military" service", and there are no wars, where do they go? I'd sure hate to be the one to lay them off. If our military has a code of ethics: "Duty, Honor, Country", what is the code of ethics for the "private military"? Who holds them accountable? Where's the chain of command?

Cheney when he was Defence Secretary: "The reason to have a military is to be prepared to fight and win wars. That is our basic fundamental mission. The military is not a social welfare agency, it's not a jobs program."

That's an excellent and scary question.

As for Col. Westhusing's tragic end, it's possible that he was so shocked by the realities of the war that something inside of him snapped. The 2,000 soldiers who have died so far are not the only military casualties. The psychological scars of the tens of thousand returning soldiers is something we should be prepared to care for for a long time.

And the money quote from the article - "I knew people would show up," that manager said later in attempting to explain why he had handled the weapon. "With 30 years from military and law enforcement training, I did not want the weapon to get bumped and go off." 30 years of military and law enforcement training should have told him to not fool with evidence (unless you need an alibi...)

So much disturbs me about this story. I can't believe that this incredibly conscientious man devoted to his family, his faith and the army would commit suicide. Can one believe that such a man would leave his family fatherless, without the benefit of any life insurance payout and perhaps army pension (I'm not sure if the Army pays out pension/benefits to survivors of a suicide), commit this terrible sin according to his faith, and dishonor his loyalty and commitment to the army? Can one believe any of what the USIS secretary or the contractor who had his hand on the gun had to say? Can one believe anything the army has to say about it's investigation? And then to top off all the misery this story has to say about the morass of immorality this war has become, there's this army psyhciatrist implying that this honorable officer was naive to think that contractors fighting in Iraq should be held to the same moral accountability as soldiers. Her moral relativism in defense of war profiteering and corruption is sickening. My heart goes out to the Westhusing family and I hope they force the army et al. to continue the investigation into Col. Westhusing's death.

You're so frustrated that you're ready to throw the blasted computer in the trash, monitor, cpu and all!

We've all been there at one time or another. And just when you think you've found the answer, the writer leaps into a whole litany of "geek speak" and once again you're headed down a dead end road.
