The Bicycle Threat

"Activists are showing a well-organized network made up of anti-Bush sentiment; the mixing of music and political rhetoric indicates sophisticated organizing skills with a specific agenda."

"Billionaires For Bush is an activist group forged as a mockery of the current president and political policies. Preliminary intelligence indicates that this group is raising funds for expansion and support of anti-R.N.C. activist organizations."

"This bicycle, having been built for the sole purpose of protesting during the R.N.C., is capable of spraying anti-R.N.C.-type messages on surrounding streets and sidewalks, also supplying the rider with a quick vehicle of escape."

Dispatches to Karl Rove from a campaign advance team? Nope. Just a few of the reports stamped "secret" in the files of the Intelligence Division of the New York City Police Department. Details here.

The really ironic thing is, "Billionaires for Bush" began life during the 2000 election as "Billionaires for Bush or Gore," handing out flyers showing the many similarities between the two candidates their political positions (pro-NAFTA, pro-military-buildup, etc.) and their family histories. Obviously, during the 2004 election, they shifted their focus to Bush only. "Billionaires for Bush or Gore" were not explictly pro-Nader, or pro- any other third party candidate, but trying to raise a point about the American electoral system and the convergence of the two parties. So let nobody say that third-party voters _still_ don't see a difference between the two parties; the protests changed accordingly.

Most of that top-secret stuff was reported on FOX News when it was happening.

Are we now all understanding the disaster that is the Bloomberg administration? That he is truly just as rabid a Bushie as Guiliani and the rest of the Republican Party? The city has returned to the lawless policing of the Wagner/Lindsay days and we are only an hair's breadth away from McCarthy and Nixon, not to mention Chicago-style police riots. It's no wonder that graffiti and other lifestyle crimes are on the rise - our Keystone Kops are chasing figments of Michael's imagination in his fealty to the Billionaires Boys' Club (of which he is, let us not forget, a charter member).

Hey, which would you rather mess around with -- professional thugs with guns and armored SUVs, or wimpy activists with spray-chalk-rigged bicycles and an avowed commitment to nonviolence? Certain facts of American policing haven't changed since, for instance, columnists during the (original) Gilded Age mocked various urban police forces for putting a lot more manpower into hunting 'anarchists' among the new unions' largely immigrant members than into discouraging the nascent organized-crime rings. The "better people" like Mayor Bloomberg have their own security to protect them from murder, rape and theft -- unlike the subway-riding masses, the Co-op Class is more concerned with keeping political & social nuisance issues, like vulgar protesters, out of their lines of sight. And the police administration, knowing which forms of "vigilance" will be best rewarded, are happy to comply. -- Anne Laurie
